Posts: 322 (19/05/08 12:45) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None Hi, As a relative newcomer to river and barbel fishing, I have a few questions that hopefully someone will answer. 1) Does anyone rate fishing directly above a weir, I have not tried it yet but I have seen some interesting swims that might be worth a chuck. 2) Do barbel lie under bridges - I believe that they do - just looking for confirmation. 3) I have not seen any barbel or chub in the streamer weed but, there are some very large trout in the same swims - do you think it worth fishing within the weed. The depth is currently about 12 - 18 inches. I have never fished the swims but may do in the future. Thanks, Dave

In low summer flows the area above a weir can be a great bet, of the few occasions I have seen large groups of barbel on the Thames, they have always been above the weir gates, but only just. They tend to sit in the depression, immediately above the gates, they are catchable but accurate casting is needed, and you have to be ready to bully them away from the structure, to prevent them either being drawn through the open gate, or bolting through it, either is game over! As John said ,carp like these places too, but they tend to hang about a little further upstream. Peter

Posts: 359 (19/05/08 22:13) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	bridges Dave hmmmm thats interesting i definetly rate above the weir fishing, only fished 1 session directly above a weir last season and had a bite which nearly took my rod in, one of those when the strike is into thin air though. Made it a priority to target these areas next season instead of the same swims i've also seen streamer weed which looks promising but it started to grow back in february, nearly went ass over tit on a patch when wading, like you say though depth is an issue, hopefully by the off there will be more than last year. I'm going for a mooch tomorrow morning and again on thurs, might catch you around Dan

Posts: 1453 (20/05/08 09:16) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	When you get a chance watch the new 'up closer' dvd, There are some magic sequences of barbel pushing their snouts through the weed and feeding on pellets spread on the top of it. Guy then goes on to catch one on a free lined pellet laid on the top of the weed. Fish like cover so under a bridge should be a natural home for them. If the bridge has a buttress in the water you will also find a depression in the riverbed behind the buttress where the converging currents meet, this can sometimes be a productive area. I have found the pools above weirs to be good roach, bream, etc areas but seldom hear of barbel coming from them, but you never know in fishing.

I have in the past taken barbel at night by laying a piece of luncheon on top of streamer weed. That was from the Kennet when it was full of streamer weed and loads of barbel. There was a swim under Hambridge, when the road and bridge were narrower, which was an excellent place to watch and catch barbel. I expect they are still there. regards Hugo
