Haslemere Angling Soc (you'll find them on google) have some new bits of the River Wey that might be worth checking out? I don't think they'd offer
easy fishing though, so it depends whether you want to put time in walking the bank or driving along the Motorway to other venues! Good luck.

Mark Unless your looking for a real challenge I`d ignore the Haslemere A.S. option, they are very few and far between in this stretch. The Mole could be a good option but again a fair degree of local knowledge would be required, it all depends on how hard you want to work for your rewards. The Wey is very patchy but the lower river certainly still holds some excellent fish but almost all of it is club owned and the club are a little rule happy. I would look at the Thames, a quick drive down any section below Runnymede once the season has started should give you a idea of where is popular. If you`d rather do the watercraft yourself just look at any section of river within half a mile downstream of a weir and fish the outside of any bend in the river, this will almost certainly put you over gravel and therefore barbel should`nt be far away. thanks for the help everyone. I used to be a member of Byfleet aa but am not anymore, they have the fishing on the wey a few minutes from my house, in 2006
summer/autumn/winter i spent hours and hours on the bank nearly every day using similar tactics and locations to where i have seen barbel come out. all my
efforts with various baits and tactics produced a single 5lb1oz fish. i don't know if it was me and how i was approaching it or just (what i have been
told) the fish in the river wey on the most part are usually lonesome rather than shoaled and wander therefore making them difficult to find and hard to catch.
I love barbel but have only been able to catch that single fish and it drove me so crazy, that, and also less free time made me stop fishing until yesturday
when i decided to go tench fishing. now all i want is some barbel action!! i think i will try out the thames and maybe have a look at the mole. is the thames
mainly club owned or day ticket? is it difficult to fish?

As the other posters have said, the Wey & Mole hold lots of decent barbel, both can be very "peggy", a pair of polaroids essential! The Thames is
a good bet for numbers of fish, plenty of big fish too! Virtually any reach will produce, just that small matter of location, they are spread right through the
river, but not in every swim and you won,t be able to spot them, mobility is the key.

Stick with Byfleet, Mark. Why travel when there is excellent fishing on your doorstep? Stick with it and the rewards will come

Mark, woking have a lot of the wey, I am a member but have only ever fished it for pike; so far.
A mate from work used to be a byfleet member and they share a section with Woking (one bank each ) below Walsham weir which he used to have some barbel from. The rest of woking's stretches are very patchy for barbel apparently; some small ones stocked a few years back seemed to have disappeared. Another mate does well below the thames weirs around weybridge/walton on pellet. |

well my only barbel was from walsham weir. its a nice place. am i fishing wrong? i used, braid hook length, size 8-10 hook, meat bait, 2 oz sliding ledger - or
less weight when not on the weir. i tried with smaller hooks, mono hook length, lighter lines, halibut boilies, halibut pellet. worm. maggot. i think its just
a hard river. might try the good old thames but carry on with the wey aswell. when the season opens in june ill start when im free. any ideas on why i might
not be catching as much as everyone else. always seem to be fish in walsham weir, is it my end tackle? thanks for the helpful replies everybody. now i know why
i loved this forum before! everyones so helpful and friendly! fantastic! Mark

hi,mark you should be able to see the barbel in the wey, spend some time looking for them without fishing, then you will know where to go next when you locate
them.

Mark, the baits you list, are used by just about every other angler, try something different, here,s a tip that used to catch me a lot of fish from the wey,
dye your meat black, and if you fancy add a flavour. Works anywhere!

Hi Mark, just back from my hols so couldn't reply earlier.
The Wey is not a too difficult water, most occasions when i fished it last year i managed to catch a few, nothing huge, but there seems plenty about in most of the areas you mention. As for tactics, your doing nothing wrong, but keep to the meats in coloured water, and small pellets in clearer water. Use 3-4' flouro hooklinks, remember to use palomar knots though! the lead you use is fine, but i prefer to use stone weights, attach a small pva bag above your weight then hook your baited hook to the bag, this will keep your rig tangle free, and allow your bait to trundle down with your free offerings. One last point drop a couple of bags in before you start fishig using the above method in 2 or 3 swims. As for swims sorry can't say on here, but one pointer is to keep away from the sand .
Peter black meat you say, now thats intresting i'll have to give
that a go as for the thames, that does my head in
