I agree with Tom about the Shad... I foul hooked one in the tail once when spinning for them. Thought I'd hooked a salmon - it must have run about 50
yards! Was only on light gear though.

only ever hooked one salmon ut dear god did it go i couldnt do a thing with it. I found tht once it got going i had no chance stopping it. But barbel do fight
hard, and i also think that size maters aswell, ive found that barbel around 11lb have the weight but also agility to go ut where as the bigger fish use their
weight more

Voted Barbel in a river - no doubt for me here as far as I'm concerned.
Carp in a lake go well especially on light tackle though. Have caught 20lb+ pike in both still waters and rivers and IMO they certainly don't compare fight wise to the above two by any stretch of the imagination. Have always thought that a good size eel fights very well for its size, pound for pound. Never have caught a salmon (or even fished for them) so can't comment on them. I`ve only had one salmon, accidentally whilst chubbing on the Dorset Stour, a fish of about 8lb which run me ragged for about 20 minutes before I netted it so I can`t really judge all salmon on one miss matched capture. River pike and summer stillwater pike both hang on a bit. Lake carp are very dogged but their river cousins can be brutal on occasions. Barbel know how to make the most of their body shape and environment and can be arm achingly strong. Not in the poll and stretching the parameters a bit as they are estuary dwellers, thick lipped grey mullet are unbelievable fighters and none of the above come anywhere near them pound for pound. I know none of that helps much but its all subjective anyway. Mic |

a big river pike in the middle of summer can give the fastest, finger cutting, searing run going in UK fresh water. But its usually just that first run.

If gudgeon grew as big as all their fresh water cousins then they would truly be the hardest fighting, but alas they dont so they are not.
Chub on light tackle can certainly pull the string a bit but I suppose for me it is a big cat followed by barbel and carp with pike coming in last but not least. |

Most fish will give a good account of themselves when hooked in the tail............................

dan1988 wrote: That's the exact opposite of my experience. Most barbel can be difficult to get off the bottom, but once you've shifted them, they will usually
just power around in circles. Just think of the numbers of big barbel caught in the Trent Meadows field on the tidal Trent, by people fishing between the small
gaps in the conveyor. Hook a carp there and it would shoot across the river, either upstream or downstream, and your line would be frayed on the pillars in
seconds.
Strangely enough, there have been a couple of times in my life when I have hooked what seemed to be a big, powerful fish that took ages to get in. These turned out to be bream, no bigger than four pounds - and they were hooked on carp tackle! Even sillier, one of these was on the North Bank of the Nene, where they normally come in like paper bags. On both occasions the bream were hooked fairly in the mouth and I have never been able to work out how the hell it happened. Perhaps they were grabbed by toothless catfish while I was playing them.

Even in Summer Pike dont fight that hard, they give a few Powerful thrust to start with and thrash around on the surface, but cannot be compared with Cats, Carp, Eels or Barbel. How about Bass on coarse fishing gear, on the tidal sections of rivers, now they really do pull back
