See where this one goes - there was some 'maintenance' done by yuku. Edit - His profile says that he posted the reply on 14/05/2008 |

If all you need is a quick fishing fix you should grab a fly rod of about 7 weight and arm yourself with a bag of mixers. Get round to your local commercial
and, if allowed, fly fish for them.

Last night I fished a work match at a very small local lake. It is predominantly a small carp lake, the biggest probably being 22lb but most pastie sized with
5 to 6lb'ers not uncommon. It is a great leveller in terms of angling skill and gives some people at work who fish 4 or 5 times a year alot of enjoyment.
I find it a great confidence boost when fishing hasn't been going too well elsewhere. Last night the wind was ripping across the lake and I struggled to see the float at 10metres, so I fished top 2 sections to hand with a 12-14 elastic under my feet (maybe doing it all wrong!!). I've used the pole probably 4 times ever, so I was happy to catch 24lb of fish in 3 hours, not knowing what sized carp would take the bait next and reaching for the remaining sections when a biggun shot off up the lake! Once the season starts I will be back on the rivers. Kris |

I must be honest i hate the things BUT my sisters son who is only 8 i took him fishing for the very first time and he love catching roach/bream and a
small carp last week . Once he got the hang of the feel of the rod i hope to take him on the river some time this season.

pritch, not everyone fishes for achievement like you and I, some people fish just to bag up every week and get bragging rights amongst mates or on matches or
wherever. If i ever go to a commercial i can guarantee i always see someone with a £2000 pole but it doesn't make them a better angler. I do remember
fishing a match once which included a guy with all the works, pole seatbox, all the terminal gear and he blanked, i on the other hand had a couple of lbs of
silvers on far less substantial gear and the guy left with 2hours remaining.
I've also noticed that a lot of people are taking the bivvy and bite alarm approach on commercials holding carp up to 8lb which is totally beyond me. If i ever fish them at this time of year its always on the pole, as i grew up fishing the pole before i got on to the rivers and leant how to fish the feeder a bit. The pole is an excellent way of fishing and i would reccomend anyone to try a bit. Like it has been said they come into their own when fishing canals, island swims etc but i like the whole business of choosing the right elastc and making my own rigs for a variety of fishing Like i say commercials are ok in my opinion if one is looking for a day out of bagging up and getting fish on the bank, but there is not much of a challenge to it
