Let me think
Never landed a Salmon, thats because the only ones I've hooked were when grayling fishing on 2lb line, so not really a fair judgement.

an 8lb carp is subdued fairly easily on a 1 3/4 tc rod, an 8lb barbel takes a tad more effort

the difference for me is that carp will just plod around and make the odd surge, barbel take it upon themselves to lead you into any snag they can get near.

gone for salmon from the selection but as scubasteve says cats give it some and if its pound for pound then then thick lipped mullet would be up there for me

Salmon. Agree with Bait Boat about river carp fighting better than barbel.

Or BIG EELs, once had a 7lb 2ozs on a 1lb 8ozs Harrison Barbel Rod, made mince meat out of me and I have never had a Barbel fight as hard !!
