Stuart,
Don't know where you live, traffic is your biggest problem not distance. but at the right time shouldn't be too bad. here is a brief list. N.E. London river Lea S.W. - Surrey, River Mole, River Wey West of London - Thames, Hampton court, Runnymeade, etc etc River Colne, various clubs. Lakes - Colne valley dozens & dozens of waters, various clubs North London - Walthamstow reservoirs Tickets- Boyer Lesiure, Cemex angling, Watford piscators, Gerrards cross & Uxbridge district AS, loads more. From west London at the right time you could be on the Rivers Loddon & Kennet in 45 mins the River Colne even less, but anyones guess in rush hour traffic, weekends will be ok though. Google the clubs above, and the rivers you should come up with loads of info, let me know if you can't find what you're looking for. Regards Ian. |

I live in zone1 WC1N. I think it would be too difficult to go to south london or south of london, as the traffic is appauling. Has anyone fished in any of the
parks?

The Feeled Angling Correspondent writes:
London Parks? Oh yes. They hold smallish to medium carp, silvers and some tench. Fished a number of them, North, Central and West as far as Kew, an age ago, in the company of an incredibly posh, South Ken. and ex-Westonbirt, highly impressionable and even more enthusiastic, similarly aged girlfriend, whilst picnic-ing and drinking wine, with, er, the handline that I somehow always had upon my person (got to keep your hand in, after all...), not exactly legally... Do some looking around, Stuart, there must be some fish in them still. |

Go west young man.
Marylebone road - Westway, leads to the Colne valley, then turn left for the Lower Thames ( all free fishing.) I fish, therefore I am... |

Stuart - I'd agree with Jackpiker. Hit the westway.

This may be useful for general fishing. You've got the docks in central South and East London. Greenland dock near Surrey Quays has some free fishing areas, there are some cracking fish in there everything from bream, tench, perch, 20lb+ carp to trout and salmon have been caught but it's a huge volume of water and can be hard going. Canada Dock near Canada Water tube also has some great fish including tench to 9lb+ and double figure carp, but is mostly controlled by a club and again the fishing can be hard. If you'd like the number of the club I can forward it on to you. But if you're looking for peace and tranquillity forget it because you'll have loads of people walking past asking what have you caught, plus the occasional group of lairy youths. I've never had any bother but I'll be honest I don't go that often now as it gets annoying. But there's some great fish in there if you're willing to make the effort and it's handy to pop over to on a summer evening. The docks in east London - Shadwell Basin, Limehouse, the Royal Docks etc are similar.
Battersea Park used to be OK for bream and roach. Gunnersbury Park used to have a large head of carp. If you really want central I think you can even fish the Serpentine in Hyde Park, you need a permit, but I don't think they're hard to get.
Don't forget the Thames in central London too, I've caught roach, dace, chub, perch, bream, flatties and eels trotting with maggots within sight of Tower Bridge. But as everyone else says for barbel you're probably best head west! |

Thanks for all the replies, and cheers Michael - got quite a bit to work with there. Could anyone give me the lowdown on Hampton Court? I've heard you can
fish there also. Again, pm me if you like. Thanks.

Hi Stuart,
I don't know very much about the fishing itself at Hampton Court, but i believe i'm correct in saying that downstream of Staines weir is free fishing all the way to the sea, that's provided you have public access, there are definatley Barbel to be caught there, I'd go down there and chat to a few on the bank, or try the lads on the Thames thread, who i believe you're already aquainted with ! a little bit further on above Staines is Runnymeade where i used to fish as a kid which is free, as always in the summer boat traffic can be a pain night and day. Good luck mate. Regards Ian. |
