Best £70-ish barbel twin tip? |
Lead | |
|
Could be going round an old loop again! I've currently got an old John Wilson 1.25 Avon (a really old one with duplon handle) and I'm looking to buy a
new 1.5/1.75 twin-tip rod, but torn between Shimano/Grauvell/Wychwood/New John Wilson.
Any opinions gratefully received! |

John,
You might need to stretch by a tenner or so, but I'd recommend the Korum Neoteric Twin Top (1.75lb and 2.2lb tc tops). It's a great all round Barb rod able to cope with many differing situations. I've also got the Neoteric 12' Quiver which comes with a 1.75 tc top with 2oz, 4 oz and 6oz tips, as well as a seperate 1.75 top - Again a great rod. Both have a quality feel to them. Cheers & ATB Never give up - There's always tomorrow!

I have a pair of JW 1.75lb TC 11/13' barbel rods. When I started using them I'd use the extension piece, ponder which quiver tip to use. Then I stuck
with the heaviest one, then I stopped using the extension, then I just used the avon tip because it had the most backbone for playing hard fighting fish. The
rod is capable of landing big fish, my best on the is 13lbs. If you fish big rivers, fast flows and floods they bottom out relatively easy and they creak when
really loaded up. That's not so good if you need to haul a fish away from a snag or play it in heavy conditions, and it's not like UK weather is
constantly predictable.
The bottom line for me is when I hook any fish using my JW it does take longer to land than my I-power (and of course it should). However I'd rather fish just using my I-power and know when push comes to shove I can mostly get fish out quick, which is better for both of us, than use two JW's (I know that's not what your asking but I thought I'd mention it). Personally I'd opt away from a rod package where you get the most number of sections and if I was buying a barbel rod for that sort of money I'd opt for a 2 piece where the money in production is being spent better on a higher quality blank which will serve me better because it helps me to play the fish better and because there's less to produce. Quiver tips are cool, but most of the time you know when a barbel takes your bait because it flies away, do you really need them? If you do then great, if not then find a rod with a sensitive tip and with a good action down into the butt. I think there's a really good article on rod test curves somewhere around, might be worth reading it. If you fish big rivers I think you look at a stronger rod, maybe something like the daiwa twilight? shimano barbel power? Either way more sections isn't necessarily better value. Dunno if any of that's useful. Hope you find what you need. Cheers, Ken |

Thanks for the replies chaps; as I mainly catch chub I will probably go for a rod with a quiver top! I've been mainly fishing the Wandle this season (very
small river) but expecting to do a few sessions on the Thames with a mate of mine this coming season so was looking for a bit of an all-rounder.
Any more views welcome... John |

John, For £79.99 have a look at the Berkley F1 Tri Tip - Comes with three tips 1.5/1.75/2lb. Have used mine for a couple of seasons and really rate it. Good fittings, and quite well balanced for the money. I use the 2lb tip for surface fishing and light ledger work for carp and it performs really well for that use as well. |

Pay a little extra for the quality Neoteric quiver I got mine from my local tackle shop for £80. It really is a fantastic all rounder. Would be great for
the chub your targeting with the 2 oz quiver and can easily step up to big river work with the avon top. I can't praise it enough.

I picked up a Barbel Tamer twin tip 1.75 SU for £75.00 a couple of months ago, not had time to test it on Barbel yet but it handled Carp to 18lb with ease last
Sunday. A friend was using the tamer last season and banked plenty of Barbel to over 14 out of a flooded Kennet and he didn't manage to break it, and he
know how to break rods so they must be strong!
Btw I still use my original JW they are a good rods when fishing light, Just wish my reel didn't keep falling off mine |

Shimano Nexave specialist medium, hard to find (maybe stapely ?) and poss just out of your price bracket? Think they are £90?
How much are the Fox Duo ? I also have the (new) Wilson Barbel (heavy) and agree with kenjiblaster. Mine feels a bit steely and stiff. I use it at 11'. It does bend well and agree
that you do have to bend it a bit.

Thanks a lot for all the replies, I know what you mean about the reel falling off sad boy; I keep mine on with a few turns of electrical tape! The weird
thing about that original JW, is the duplon handle finishes leaving a foot of bare carbon. I bought a foot long length of shaped handle and slid it on to
finish it off.
There seem to be 4 Shimano ranges about; the Hyperloop, Nexave, Alivio and Catana; looks like you get what you pay for with them.

The duplon handle is full on my original JW avon but I've had to put a piece of bicycle inner tube on it to hold the reel on, I should have paid the extra
tenner and got a cork handle one. Got the JW barbel avon, bit heavy but seems to handle barbs ok
Wensum..........lose some!

Prodigys JW Avons, Shimano Wychwoods, we all can find fault or praise for any rod, but the bottom line is the best rod we have ever bought was the last one.
Its human nature its justifying our choice. |

I have 3 rods that I use for Barbelling. A JW Avon, Wychwood Barbel, and a carp rod when its flooded. Caught on all three. None cost more than £60.

I have a fox barbel duo 12ft 1.5lb test curve. I busted the quiver tip top (trod on the rod in the aftermath of catching a nice fish) so use the non-quiver top
exclusively. I fish in summer & winter with this rod and it's fair to say it has taken a real hammering. It has come through with flying colours and
has tamed a respectable number of fish to 14lb plus. I have a Greys Prodigy waiting in the wings and I only hope it is a reliable as the trusty fox. Bought
mine for about £70 as I remember.

I picked up a Normark Nirvana 11.5' (light carp/big barbel) on Ebay for £39 a couple of months ago. They're still selling on there for between £40 and
£50. Fabulously slim blank with abbreviated duplon handle and two tops - 1.5lb and 2lb. Used it a few times so far and feels very nice. I also use a Hyperloop
XT, which would probably suit you better as the quivers are sensitive but the rod has plenty of grunt for a (hopefully) big Thames barbel.
Whatever you choose, good luck on the Wandle after the failrly recent pollution incident. Cheers, Rich |

Thanks Rich,
I've ended up ordering a Greys Prodigy 1.75 quiver for £89.99 after a good few hours spent scouring the web for the best prices. Couldn't ignore Dazza's posts! For that price it was close to the other makes anyway. There is still the odd good'un in the Wandle if I can find them and if the Thames is anything like last season, it sounds like you need a fairly pokey rod... Thanks for all the replys, just can't wait to get back out there... John |
