All for it, myself - after all, the Scots, Irish and Welsh make something of their patron saints.
Interesting snippet of info' for all English Patriots: the original St. George was, I believe, Turkish... |

All for it, myself - after all, the Scots, Irish and Welsh make something of their patron saints. I believe St Patrick was Welsh! |

"George" was from Asia Minor - modern Turkey. The story of him slaying the dragon dates to way WAY back, is Middle Eastern in origin and was brought
back to Britain by returning Crusaders, who then given the myth / legend a Christian spin...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_George_and_the_Dragon Still, give us a holiday! |

April 23rd is also the day when reputedly Shakespeare was born in 1564. He coincidentally died on that day 52 years later.
" ........ cry God for Harry! England and Saint George!" and let us celebrate with a holiday. regards Hugo |

A friend of mine and his family used to own a well known pub/nightclub in West Drayton. Every year they would have special events for the various patron saints
days with the relevant flags, bunting etc and general party atmosphere. Theres was no problem with the Saint Patrick's , David's or Andrew's day
events. When he did exactly the same for St. Georges day however, he would receive his yearly phone call from some prat at the Council offices in Uxbridge,
telling him to remove all evidence of flags, bunting etc. as it was offensive the local Indian and Pakistani populations, OR ELSE!! Can you believe it!! Of
course every year he simply told the relevant busybody to "go forth and multiply", or words to that effect. It has to be said also, that he had full
support from his wife , who was I believe of middle eastern heritage. She thought the council's attitude was the most ridiculous thing she had ever heard
of and I tend to agree. Political coorectness taken to it's extreeme? I doubt it, as this all occurred over ten years ago. I can't imagine it's got
any better, but hope that I'm wrong.

My reason for not caring is that I have absolutely no idea who he was (except that he was a foreigner) and I also haven't a clue what month it's in,
let alone what day it's on.
English as tuppence, changeless as canal water, nestling in green nowhere, armoured and effete, bold flag-bearer, lotus-fed Miss
Havishambling, hermit-crab, tight-fist, eremite, feudal still, reactionary Rawlinson End.

The Chairman, presently at 'The Witless Oik', Tuesday evening
Peter, I am surprised. I would have thought that you, of all people, would have known that Georgiou was the creator of the shishkebab. Truly a Top Man. Someone who made Modern English Culture possible... As ever, B.B. |

I would be more impressed if he invented the DONER kebab, or Chicken Tikka Masala (with a nice pint of Kingfisher ).

Was he Cheddar George, inventor of the Welsh Rarebit? Perhaps Gorgeous George, the dandy of the Middle Ages, who used to polish the back of his shield so that
he could check his pose while riding his horse. I'd celebrate a Saint Abdul's Day if it meant another day off work.
