Seen for the first time this year on the brook that runs through our village mother duck with 14 tiny new born ducklings. Now I reckon this is a month
earlier than last year. Anyone else noticed anything early.
Soon be seeing swallows at Christmas.

very true my partner started complaing about the fishing season starting and that usually doesn`t happen till mid may !!!

I work in the Dairy industry (milk powder not bottling) and this time last year we were producing 2 million ltrs of milk a day at the moment were seeing less
than a hundred thousand ltrs its definatly a late spring for our industry.

I'm not denying the fact that it is considerably cooler than last year, but it seems that everything apart from the fish spawning seems to get earlier.
When we were younger and went birds nesting it was during May, now it seems early April is common. This is the earliest I've seen ducklings for ages. |

I was very suprised to see a small number of sand martins flitting over the Ouse in York city centre earlier this week . Last Sunday I too saw a mallard with
an enormous brood of chicks in tow , 15 I think .These sightings would certainly indicate that spring has sprung despite the cold temps , night frosts and
'envigorating ' easterlies . Funny old world ..

Indeed it is, have seen a couple of brave swallows already and a cuckoo has been heard on the Ashdown Forest.

Come off it chaps, it's freezing.
The bulbs were up early, but everything else is shivering and hoping things get better. The Met Office were saying that this summer was going to be an 'average' British summer - a clear sign, if it was needed, that global warming is with us don't you think? Kindest Mike W

No, the river is telling me it's not.
Last season, 18th April I watched 2 big barbel spawning in my local river. Shadowed by 4 or so small barbs (males ?) they were giving it a right go. Half an hour I watched then doing their thing, much more than I would give to sites in the net, for example. Today, diddly-squat. None about, anywhere. Chub are congregating, but Barbel, nah, whatwife |

Victim of my own irony whatwife. I don't think that spring has sprung yet at all - I was trying to be ironic - a met office chap was saying that the
average summer prediction was a sure sign of global warming. I was seething - for crying out loud - windy January? - global warming! Mild February? - global
warming. Cold March? - global warming! Every possible combination of weather seems to justify the diagnosis of the pessimists. Am I the only one who laughs at
the perenially incorrect forecast?

Down in Sunny Deb'n thing are something of a paradox. I saw my first House Martins in February. The Great Crested Grebes have eggs. I saw Swallows two
weeks ago, Ive heard the Cuckoo and the ponds have more daphinia and invertebrates (especially Water Boatman) moving around than I've ever seen this
early.........normally its May before the water has this much visible activity. This is all taking place against a backdrop of the kind of temperatures we
normally see in January, and it has been the wiundiest Spring I can ever remember. I have no theories, just observations

No theories here either. Swans on nest last time I went walking. Some coots had 2 chicks and other's didn't. Missed what swallow-type bird flew
overhead, but it wasn't a swift. The river itself looked pretty bleak. First bit of the countryside West of London

Late if you ask me - went Carping yesterday - bloody freezing !!!! Biting cold wind more like winter than spring. This time last year I was walking round in a
Tshirt.
To add insult to injury - had one run from a large Carp which proceeded to run 40 yds into a snag and there it stayed. He surfaced took one look at the weather and thought "bugger that" !! Spring / Early I will have a pint of what you are on !!!!

The ducks are early thats for sure. Only Today though have I seen Swallows, they are running late. Ive seen them in February before. Had a couple of hours
carping this aft, in thermals, windproofs, and wooly hat and totally froze. Things are not early for me thats for sure.

Clematis had flowered a month earlier last year.
Woodpecker mistakes our TV aerial for a fine oak - a sign the sap is rising. (Or that daytime TV sucks. Not sure which). Again, last year he was at it earlier (March). Forget-me-nots later this year than last. Yet, the Carp are moving in the shallows. I've had a fair few over the past two weeks, right under my feet, freelined. The ducks have eggs on their nests, the blackbirds are snuggling deep inside the monster Lleylandii at the bottom of the garden and I too have seen the first house martin of the year (last week, flying in the teeth of a cold easterly). A mixed picture. Perhaps how spring should be? |

No rivers and walking them and coarse-fish-spotting for a fortnight yet, being glad of and revelling in The 666 Break, yet...
Walking to the shop at 9.45am on Sunday, to get some milk, a grass-green, parrot-squawking, long-tailed thing well-remembered from the Himalaya flew above me, out of the nearby Park, across the main road and the over local garage. Ring-necked parakeet. My heart briefly leapt and a smile worked at my face. Some sort of spring. |
