Posts: 25 (03/04/08 09:08) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None Just received a Spring/Summer 2008 Chapmans catalogue, and the blurb for the Daiwa Twilight Barbel Specialist rod contains this gem of the copywriter's art: "Barbel is now the fastest spreading specimen species with *few UK coarse fishing rivers free of them*". A quick Google reveals that at least one online tackle supplier has amended this to "with few UK coarse fishing rivers being without barbel as a resident". Something possibly lost in translation in the original text?

Is that not correct? I recon the copywriter got it right first time! It was but a few short years ago folks used to travel to the Hants Avon to catch their first barbel..........how times have changed? you caught a boris yet joshbarbwall?

You're missing the point - "free of them" makes barbel sound like vermin rather than a welcome addition. That's why the text was amended by the online tackle dealer I quoted.

When will we ever learn!!?? Tunnel vision springs to mind...........Barbel, if they are not in your local river yet,...................they will be,.......... guaranteed!!

Barbel do not belong in every river, in spite of the wishes of some; they are the 'fish of the moment', the new rock 'n' roll, and so there is an understandable desire to have them all over the place, but this desire is (in my view) misguided. Beware of single-species myopia, it's a curse! To generalise slightly, nature doesn't often get it wrong. To cite the indigenous credentials of barbel is slightly misleading; viable populations have existed since the last ice-age in SOME east coast rivers and their tributaries, but not all by any stretch - climate, topography and other factors ensured they did not thrive in some rivers which would have been connected to the same Rhine system which populated the Trent, Thames, Yorkshire rivers etc. This does, then, support Moaner's view - their continued existence in many rivers is only through man's intervention. Is this acceptable? desirable? I'm not sure, but the debate is one worth having. The copywriter was grammatically correct, by the way. The inference was a bit odd, but I get the feeling that this thread is no longer about 'er majesty's English. atb Jon

Never forget the momentary double-take that I had on the lower Wye thirty-odd years ago. I was salmon-fishing with a very successful local salmon-angler whom I had helped the previous season to catch western Welsh salmon with which he had been having some difficulty. On that Wye day out with him, he was prawning and I was spinning. "I'm in!" he called out to me as he lifted into a fish. I walked down the bank to him, arriving at the moment the fish surfaced for the first time in front of him. "Ach! Fook it!" Off came the Sharpes telescopic gaff from the belt of his Barbour, the steel duly flashed and out came a fish of seven or eight pounds. Barbel. Into the bushes behind us it went, unhooked, undespatched and still alive. I went and found the fish and knocked it on the head. Quite a shock to an all-rounder's system.
