Where do we draw the line and just because it runs like tapwater and we feel good being near nice surroundings does not make it a great place to be if you are a Barbel!!...........am I making sense with anyone yet???

Posts: 271 (30/03/08 23:00) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Moaner, it seems t me your trying tp flip the argument on it's head, by citeing rivers that have been stocked with Barbel in recent years, some more succsesfully than others, but including the river Medway i don't believe there has been an entirley unsuccsesful stocking of any river, mostly which have been to attempt to redress the fall of Barbel populations due to pollution and destruction of habitat, those issues whilst not completly resolved have seen much improvement in the rivers that suffered worse, ie. the river Wensum where Chris Turnbull & co have done a magnificent job. It may be the case in some stockings with hindsight that it was premature, but i believe never entirely unsuccsesfull, The Medway has areas which aren't particulaly suited to Barbel spawning, but others where they do and breeding populations exist. I do think it was ( with hindsight ) a mistake to stock the Severn because of the impact on the indigenous fish population particulaly Chub, but as far as the Barbel goes, it was entirely to their likeing - or am i missing something. If you believe that stocking these rivers especially those which originaly had, and some which never lost natural populations of Barbel, was a bad thing, then what is your opinion of stocking stillwaters ?, OK it would seem so long as it pulls your elastic as you put it on the other site, hence my comment on you not being a Barbel angler, I got an instant picture of you when i read those posts you made on the other site, which prompted me to post them on here, which i regretted for the reason it was pulled by the administrator, as far as my comments go i regretted those to, going into knee jerk rant i should have kept my mouth shut, but i've said them, and i'll stand by them, but if you convince me that i'm out of order in my comments . i.e that i dont believe you care a bit about the fish, i'll PUBLICLY on here apologise to you with all sincerity. any future posts i make - if i do - i'll make sure i stick to the subject matter. Commercial pressure..........does that not fit Both types of water we Anglers want Barbel /Carp in waters easy for us to access so we can have a day out and catch a few.....no rocket science there ! Its all about our selfish greed and that is the Bottom line running water or stillwater is in actual fact irelivant when you consider that most of the Anglers on here paticulaly will not admit that their local river is a poor habitat for their local population of barbel!! (go onto the Medway thread and see what happens!!) Most don't want to admit that they "the Barbel Guardians" off their local cut may be committing a wrong doing to their barbel that they have verbally fought to have introduced and the fish are disappearing because the habitat is #%!#!! (Cant be a problem they cry because the water is clear and its a river!) But of course what do I know..........compared to a BFW Lynch mob on the hunt of troublemaker.......Screaming "Ban the non believers"! I've said my peace........get your Knives sharpened lads i've spoke and proved my point, what you must ask yourselves is this........... join the ACA!! cos most of you lot aint members.......FACT!!

I UNRESERVEDLY APOLOGISE WITH ALL SINCERITY, REGARDING MY COMMENTS IN MY PREVIOUS POST, i hope you accept that in the sincerity it's given. As i said to your mate if it was your purpose to wind people up then i took the bait hook line and sinker if you pardon the pun. So tell me are we in a genuine argument here or are you indeed winding us all up, if you are i'm sure we'll all have a good laugh especialy at my expense If your comments are your true opinions, then fair enough i'll continue to argue the toss with you, knowing what i do about you in a more civil manner, once again my sincere apologies. Posts: 38 (30/03/08 23:50) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Okay one final post as Ian grant has Posted an i had not seen it while writing the above If you knew who I was you would realise i have fished for Barbel a long time, I have many Barbel to my name including many large girls from quite a few rivers over many years (not saying as a boast but just to explain where I'm coming from) I decided to post on here because over a long period of Barbel fishing the Hypocrisy surrounding these arguments are based on nothing but self interest and so called Barbel Anglers with either selfish reasons not realising that their belifes are so full of holes is behond belief!! I suggest you read this thread again an see how nasty an arrogant you mostly have been with on the face of it most have not a clue you are talking about!! So clean running water is the key it seems, or the EA would not stock Barbel if they would not thrive? Gett the facts lads not stupid ideas with no basis ! Read between the lines a little I merely play devils advocate and drawn out a few poignant facts and aggressive behaviour from some who feel threatened for reasons that are BFW Ian No problem............. Though you deliberatly gave me and others the impression of being someone you obviously are not, and i possibly should have recognised that with the direction your posts were taking. Anybody can do what you have done playing devils advocate as you put it. Please explain why you think the people on here are hypocrites, where have we said one thing but guilty of doing another. I think that description fits better the other way, and for that you'll get no apology from me this time There are many on these boards who've also caught big girls from various rivers, but would not hold your views. In my opinion your arguments hold no weight at all, yes you are correct that restocking of Barbel in rivers that has taken place over the years has been for selfish reasons, so that we can catch them basically, but the upside of that is that it has been succsesfull ( more in some cases than others i'll admit ) in restoring an enviroment to it's former level, once that enviroment has been suitably restored into a habitat that Barbel can again thrive in, and it's not just the Barbel that are included in the restoration, and not only fish species either, birdlife, and wildlife in general have benifited from these restorations which the Barbel restocking is only a part of the picture. The greed you speak of lies soley at the feet of people who stock and fish for species which are placed into a habitat which they are clearly not suited to, and has no benefit to the enviroment in general whatsoever, the only ones who benifit from stocking barbel in stillwaters are the commercial owners, the people who fish these places and possibly the cormorants It's the opinion of many of the people on here that Stocking Barbel into stillwaters is just plain wrong, and i'm still not sure where you stand on that, certainly the hypocrisy you speak of does not come from our direction in my opinion, no doubt you disagree and thats your god given right, the aggressive behavior you speak of , i believe came only from me, and for that i apologised, i saw no one else getting aggressive only giving heartfelt opinions, it seems to me from the time you came into the thread, you put forward arguments soley to get a response which i suppose is the idea of a debate, and you got the responses i believe you were looking for, just because some people aren't members of the ACA ( many on here are ) doesn't make them hypocrites either, many contribute to the support of our rivers and lakes in other ways. As i said before knowing what i know about you now, i respect your right to hold your views, agree with you never, if that makes me a hypocrite i suppose i'm the biggest of all. Regards Ian.

Posts: 541 (31/03/08 08:15) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	moaner i think you have your facts wrong you said in a earlier post that the medway has a decreasing stock of barbel well fraid to say wrong as of the last electro fish there is a very healthy population of barbel in the medway fish ranging from 1lb and below to double figures. so if the river is so bad why have they spread down the river from the upper medway right down to were the river becomes tidal. Barbel dont belong in stillwaters its all about money money money

Posts: 10 (31/03/08 14:22) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Wow I never expected to provoke such a reaction, it seems to me that people are totally and utterly against Barbel being stocked into lakes or are really not that bothered and would be happy to just wind up the people who are against it (obviously there are exceptions to this but this is my general feeling from this thread). It also seems to me that the people who are against it are not even happy to discuss the possibility of stocking Barbel into lakes let alone fish for them, I can see their point and this is why I felt I should gain others opinions before giving it a dabble myself. As a conclusion I think I will stick to fishing the Canals for Perch Roach Bream and Carp until June, cue people having a go about how the closed season should apply to all fishing but hay I love fishing and could not imagine a week passing without the chance to fish.
