First off it is not a big chuck to get to the fish, I am talking 10 - 20 yards to get to the gulley that runs along the beach. Depending of the chop you may need an ounce at most 4. Mostly I will be fishing with half a shrimp for a species called pompano that grow up to 8lb but 4lb is the average. Possible for smaller tarpon, redfish and a couple of other species but apart from sharks and rays top out at 50lb'ish. So given those parameters how would you tackle up ? Please take into account my absolute dread of multipliers ! Cheers Andy

But at that distance you probably won't need one unless you have to keep the line away from snags and rocks. Multipliers - well at that distance you can prevent the dreaded overruns by adjusting the free spool running - but this will also depend on the amount of weight you're going to be using. Nothing really wrong with fixed spools, just that I prefer to use a multiplier for certain situations. Have you considered a side cast reel? Do those critters have teeth - are they sight feeders - whats the current and water conditions like - turbulent, smooth etc? So many questions...... Cheers Bob

Posts: 7697 (28/03/08 10:01) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Andy, i prefer a multiplier when sea fishing due to the clutch mate, as Bob said theres some fairly anti lash ones available nowadays, coupled up with the fact thats its real close range fishing, did you take any cat rods when you left the uk andy? one of these with a decent multiplier should cope with what you need for the scenario you describe, or even a decent uptide rod mate....j.w sounds like your in fishing heaven mate

Sounds a bit like fishing the Trent or Severn! Would a `sea-reel' be useful on a river? Declan

Posts: 7698 (28/03/08 10:53) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Declan, the clutch on most decent multipliers will be far better than most fixed spool reels mate, the emphasis is on close range fishing, remembering that most sporting sea fish fight harder than our uk freshwater fish, thus the need for a good clutch when fishing on a short line mate, Andy did i read correctly that expected species could or would reach weights of up to 50lbs mate?, do they sell the ugly stick range of rods where you are in usa?, cat or carp rods seem as though they could suffice though unless yer hit one of them lovely shining silver plated beauties envy you, oh yes i do....j.w

Two things that I remember from that trip are :- 1. Be prepared to loose weights in the rocks 2. Get your bait for free. 1. The locals use a simple paternoster with a weak link to a nut and bolt set up. Cheaper than lead. 2. They use a strip of bacon fat tied to string. pegged out up the beach and the bacon in the scum line of the tide. Watch out for little critters mooching about just under the sand and scoop them out. They are either cockles or small mussels and the fish love them. I used a feeder with bait dip soaked cork balls and the cockles went mad for it. Getting free bait is almost as much fun as the fishing. The locals initially thought that I was mad and then thought I was such an expert that they called their mates to see this new method of bait collection. I was just coincidence that I had an old feeder and a container of cork balls used for fly fishing in my bag. Just as an aside, the cork ball container split on the way back home, the drug detecting dog went mental once he detected my 'stash'. HM customs were very understanding, lucky for me that one of them was a serious carper and he identified the Monster Crab smell without even seeing the offending container. I was still subject to some serious questioning. Tight lines Dave.

Been asking these questions on US forums and it is like drawing blood from a stone ! Pompano are sight feeders Bob. As for conditions.....well mainly dictated by oddly enough the weather. Bet you fell over when you read that lol Seriously I haven't a clue, it is one of the most popular beaches in Florida, oddly enough closest one to Orlando. Just a spit and a jump from Cape Canaveral. I am thinking if there is a hurricane due I won't be fishing. John - funny enough I asked my sister to send out the rods I used to use for catting. A pair of 12.5ft 2.75tc. All of my tackle is in her shed, bless it is literally full up with my stuff. On those rods I have a pair of 15 odd year old original Aero Baitrunners so they have served their purpose so do not mind if I kill them with saltwater. Things is I know how far I can cast with them if needs be and that would be far further than me playing with a multiplier. Guy - yep had a look at the B series. I will see how my Aero's do. But still have the same feeling about them as I did when at home. Nice and simple for the US market but with really #%@% line lay. Sturdy agreed but I will still be using braid as a mainline so line lay is an issue. There are grass carp about but from what I can find mostly around Kissimmee which is about an hour a way. This is really more of a fact finding mission to prepare for trips further afield for tarpon to be honest by making some local contacts. After all would you rather fish for grass carp or tarpon ? Dave - there is a small crab species called sand fleas, they look like fleas I guess, that you can collect from the beach so won't be spending lots on bait. As for leads will be using triangle leads that pretty much stick to the bottom. From all I have read rocks are not too much of an issue but guess I will find out. Cheers Andy

Bait anchored to the bottom isnt necesarily the best bet also occasionally used a rolling lead for Cod in the Bristol Channel - 9/10 times though anchored is better. For Plaice I used to use watch leads as they make a decent puff of sand as they move over sand. If snags a problem I would look up a pulley rig or ue "rotten bottom". I actually much prefer a fixed spool. Being able to gain line extremely quickly is essential when landing large cod off rocky shores and having right hand on the rod helps a lot as well. Watching anybody using a multiplier in similar situations the retrives appears so pedestrian and it just looks like they ought to lose bigger fish if hooked!
