Posts: 11 (02/03/08 17:36) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None Hello guys, I'm fishing a small local river next season, (the Brue) and have decided to try/stick to my Barbel style roving approach for Chub, and maybe the odd Carp or Tench that inhabit certain stretches of the river. I am a total newbie to Chub so I am after any advice I can get. I have been told that the Chub grow to about 6lb but I would think that is the exception, not the rule. Line strength, baits, hooks, tactics etc, anything to help me on my would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance, Rob.

Posts: 668 (02/03/08 20:41) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	In my experiences with Chub, they like to pick up baits and feel minimal resistance, so fish with either running set-ups or freeline baits. Couple this with soft quiver tips and you'll hopefully be able to transform more of your bites into fish. If fishing hair rigged baits, fish so that the bait is tight against the hook or band a bait onto the hook instead. I often fish running rigs with a float stop attached to my mainline about 3" above the lead so it acts as a mini bolt rig. I then sit on my hands until the small raps on the rod tip turn into a pull round as the Chub self hooks itself. Line stengths, I tend to use something like a 6lb - 8lb mainline, my favourite being the Insight GR-60 in clear and for hooklinks I linke the Berkley 4lb Fireline braid in black which I think they call smoke or gunsmoke colour. Hooks, I tend to use Drennan Super Specialist Barbel in size 14 but often switch to size 18 Kamasan Animal hooks if fishing more delicate baits like maggot. Last Edited By: PJ Martin 02/03/08 20:44. Posts: 1320 (04/03/08 00:32) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Avon rod with the lightest quiver tip you can get (1/2 oz or 3/4 oz is ideal), reel, 6lb line, size 6 hook, plasticine or a light link ledger - big lump of smelly cheese paste. Do not make any noise when you approach the swim. Do not skyline or shine a light near the swim. Cast as gently as possible - better to lower the bait into the swim if poss. Fish with the rod in a rod rest and holding the rod - strike quickly at any indication. 3 casts and 20 minutes maximum in any swim before moving on. If you miss a bite or lose a fish prob best to move straight away. This advice given to me a couple of years ago helped to increase my returns of large chub - give it a go and let us know Cheers Graham BAF

Posts: 42 (12/03/08 21:33) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	If you are in the market for a book to help you on your way may i suggest you try to get hold of a copy of the chub study group`s book called simply "chub", published by Boydell. E-bay probably your best bet to locate a copy. If I might add my two pennorth, the key to sucessful chub angling is twofold. One, feed the swim for enough time to allay the chub`s natural caution, if you want to catch more than one chub from each swim and two, be switched on from the moment your bait hits the water. I`d hate to guess how many chub I missed because i was faffing around having just cast in before I learnt the lesson. 21 chub in a day with 7 over 5lb up to 5lb15oz from the Kennet last week says I`ve finally learnt to pay attention from minute one. One of the quickest ways to kill a chub swim, as I know to my cost, is to return the fish to the swim they were caught from, on a small river that is(Wensum) don't know if the same applies on some of the larger rivers. Wensum..........lose some!

Posts: 43 (13/03/08 20:34) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Gasman No I hardly ever use a keepnet these days but I do carry a queenford bream retention system with me for those occasions when it all goes right. The Q.B.R. system is a lot less bulky and I think kinder to chub than a net the only proviso being that I never retain more than 3 chub in it at a time, some might say thats too many but until now I`ve not had a problem. The session in question, I probably covered over a mile of river in the day not spending more than 20 minutes in a swim if I didn`t get a bite. I fed the next two swims before settling into each sucessive spot. Works for me on small rivers, which the Kennet is. I have noticed that returning fish is not such a swim killer on the Thames which I also fish. That said I rarely get big hits of chub on the Thames, normally I`m grateful for a fish or two a session. At times the chub would compete with each other to take the bait. I never had a problem with returning fish where I was standing, usually in mid stream, and at times the chub would come back for seconds...one day I had the same fish three times from the same swim. I say *was* my favorite method as my back and legs are now knackered, probably due to standing/stooping in rivers for over 50 years I know of a few spare copies of 'Chub' by the C.S.G. Recently I was privy to a conversation where a couple of guys said they had bought a fair amount when the book went 'remaindered' Unfortunately they were all sold. E-Bay looks like the only way to get hold of one; (and I'm not selling my copy) perhaps we should consider doing a re print. A second CSG book is in the process of being put together, the final draft should be ready by Nov/Dec this year. I'll put regular up-dates on the new CSG site for those who could be interested. On books in general, if you look about there is always the odd one that slips through on market stalls/junk shops. I bought Andy Orme's 'Barbel Mania' for £5-00 from a second hand shop in Northallerton and a Bernard Venables 'Freswater Fishing' for £1-50 from Ch le St market, the guy wanted £2-50 but I said that I was £1-00 short Tight Lines, WEARYONE. Posts: 3134 (18/03/08 09:44) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I've been doing a lot of small water chubbing over the last 4 or 5 seasons. I'm lucky to have access to a lovely little river, not too far from home. Its only small........... and gets chocked with weed in the warmer months......... The Chub arnt huge, but there numbers make up for there lack of size. I regularly take 20 or more in an afternoons roving. I normally use either a 10ft, light quiver tip rod or a waggler rod for float fishing, with 5lb line and a small fixed spool reel. Most have been taken on the ledger, with either maggot, bread or worm hookbaits, but over the last couple of seasons I've been float fishing with maggots and noticed that my catch rate has increased. I dont bother with a keepnet as even if I'm floatfishing I rove. I know I could probably catch more fish by sitting still in one place, but with a mouthwatering swim around every bend, it would be a waste IMO. One thing I have noticed about the bites on the 'tip' is that although I'm fishing close in, and can see my bait, sometimes the bait can disappear into the Chubs mouth and it can take what seems like an age (maybe as long as 10 seconds) before the tip moves. Most times these fish are hooked 'well down', where as if I strike a second or two after the bait disappears they are normally lip hooked. The other nice thing about using the float is that I have started catching a few other species, like good sized Dace, Roach, Perch, Trout etc. The last visit I used some home made Cheese paste, and took Chub after Chub. I used a "paste mate" and left plenty of hook showing. I'd say that the most important thing about Chub fishing is your approach. One wrong foot and you've blown it. I've posted this one before, but here is a Chub my lad Ben had last summer, Its weight was 3lb 8oz, but obviously looks bigger due to his size. Far better than three rods and a bivvie. I would imagine that late summer will be a challenge finding a bit of open water though. Excessive weed growth is something we don't have in the North East. I've spent a fair bit of time wading the river, so I've started to build up a picture of the depth changes. I'm lucky to be able to "discreetly" open up these areas, to enable me to be able to fish. There are also plenty of overhanging trees and bushes which stop the light, and the weed is much sparser here. It looks a lot bigger than 3lb 8oz, i had a 4lb2 on the last day from my local and it doesn't look half the size of that specimen. Looks an excellent little river too steve, i am in the same boat, i have a small river near me that i havent fished yet but i have been told it is full of chub, i cant wait to give it a go next season Dan
