Once again, the river looked great and is still holding colour although it's at pretty much normal level. One small chub for my efforts today, now it's time to focus fully on my parenting duties....before the tench wake up I'm suprised the BA hasn't thrown up a 15lber this season, not that I've heard anyway.....? Well done to everyone who's been out and who's contributed to a really great Bristol Avon thread on BFW this season. Well done Frank - I'd love to see the photo of your 12 14 if possible? I fished right through yesterday and couldn't even get a bite from a chub let alone the barbel. All the fry / bleak that were in the slacks earlier in the week had disappeared and I never saw or heard a fish top all day even in the usually reliable dusk time. A very disappointing end to the season, but hey, just three months and we'll be back on again! Browny

Must say it seems unlikely though to me as it hasn't really been exceptionally warn or anything this year to shift spawning times forward. Browny

Well happy about the season we just had best one so far for me loads of barbel and a stack of doubles of different rivers the most Ive ever had so well chuffed .. All the barbel gear is cleaned and put away and the carp gear is now ready and waiting so I'm going to try and get me a 20lb+ carp as never had one that size well never targeted them so we will see what happens .. Roll on the 15th of June as well as going to be on the Ebro with barbel Dave for a week after me first 100lb+ cat so really looking forward to that roll on .. Clive cracking fish and well done good picture ..Simon good to see ya ill have to get the train down to bath as we said and bring the wife and go for a few beers as well ..well all the best to you lot and ill see ya in the new season Regards John

Posts: 621 (16/03/08 11:33) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Simon, these little birdies need shooting... not a huge fish but considering the way its fished over the last few days i was well happy to land my 27th double of the season, All in all it must be said its been a good year for me, not just in the amount of fish ive caught , but also ive met a few other anglers on the bank that were a pleasure to chat with.. One observation.... I thought the banks were a lot busier this year than i can ever remember them being in the past, and my own view is that long term this will be good for our fish, more anglers mean more quality bait and in turn we see bigger fish. we may not see the known big fish grow much more as i think most are fairly old, but the younger ones coming through and having a much improved diet may well eclipse anything we know of at the moment, ok, may be not next season but i would certainly be hopeful of seeing some fish over the next 3 or 4 seasons that will stand out, The future looks good for the Bristol Avon. kev Your Signature ... http://kwhitcombe.barbelfishingworld.yuku.com/

Also, many fish not being caught at expected weights due to massive summer and winter floods, tearing out reed beds and river weed, in turn wiping out of majority of invertibrate and aquatic creatures, that fish need on a daily basis. Many fish I would think have been surving on anglers baits. Let's hope for a warm gentle spring, to get things back on track.

Posts: 20 (16/03/08 22:04) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Dour End to the Season As the river level was falling, I had discounted the effect of salt etc off the roads as the cause of the poor fishing. Certainly earlier in the week with the first flush coming through that might have been the case but with it falling and the colour starting to drop out I can't really see there being much salt left to affect things. As for the big floods wiping out vast amounts of natural food, I think that is a bit over dramatic. There is plenty of weed, reeds and fry in the river to keep the system going. I think the poor fishing on the Bristol Avon over the last few days was just one of those strange things that happen in fishing from time to time to keep it interesting and unpredictable. To demonstrate my point, my last Barbel of the season came on a freezing night with low clear conditions fishing liquidised bread in a cage feeder and a small piece of flake on a size 10, (I had Chub in mind) but at 11-14 the Barbel was a well received surprise. Without the unexpected wouldn't fishing be boring. Browny

Posts: 117 (17/03/08 10:33) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Hi Browny, I'm not saying the whole invertabrate system has been wiped out, but it has been hit dramatically. Streamer weed by the end of the summer floods was almost non existant and also many of the reed beds, and this must've had an impact. I hardly saw any dragon flies this autumn, nothing like in previous years. As for the salt in the water; up in Gt Ouse country, we had two lots of heavy rain with quite a gap in between. It'd been some weeks since our last drop of 'real' rain and in that time the spreaders were out making up for lost time, so there was thousands of tonnes of 'pollutants' washed into our river systems. When I fished the Avon on the Tues/Weds it was holding lots of colour, so within that sedament there must have been quite a bit of deissolved salt. On the Thurs I and a buddy fished the Gt Ouse and the heavy colour had dropped out.................we both caught. So yes I do put much of the lack of fish caught on the Avon down to the 'pollutants', after all atmosheric conditions were spot on.

A mate i was with hooked into big barbel but lost it in the snags........... he is still a bit tearful. roll on June it cant come quick enough. all the best

I caught early in the week (but not on thursday or friday). I have not seen the stretch I fish so busy - it was like opening day on the royalty! I saw one fool feed about 10 handfuls of pellet into a swim on thursday and leave after 30 minutes! You may as well pack up with idiots like that around. Looking forward to next season already. James

Looked to be deep but had a good flow , it was the bathhampton weir pool and manor water.
