Thanks Eric for reporting back from the EA - better the devil you know.
Good luck all those out this week. It's slowly warming up so should be some fish coming out before Saturday.

Fished yesterday afternoon until 6pm - had one smallish barbel of about 2,5lb (and was fishing for barbel too!). Very happy to have caught on my last session
of the season - though there's a remote chance that I'll be out Friday.

Closed Season Fishing | ||

Hi Guys congrats to all of you who've enjoyed another successfull season on the fantastic Goyt myself included I think all of you will agree that this
River is just getting better and better. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank puplicly tony bielderman of stockport fed who since our little
gathering at the hare and hounds has devoted at least two days a week and more on some occasions to litter picking and membership checks as well as the cutting
back of the shrubs and trees for safer better access at otterspool and Im sure that you'l all agree things are looking a lot better and rightly so, However
I was on the River yesterday the 15th and already ive had to deal with Closed Season anglers at pear mill and whilst I was down there who should I bump into
yes Tony working as hard as ever clearing litter that is still being left by some anglers who take the trouble to bag their litter then leave it hung in a
tree. Anyway we got talking and I got onto the subject of Bailifing and and the lack of it apart from tony's one man band who dont get me wrong is doing a
fantastic job but this guy needs help and that help should come from those who are fishing the river ie you and I now those who know me know what I do for a
living and for me it would be a confict of interests which is a shame but thers nothing stoping you guys voluteering your services idealy you could work in
pairs which makes sense from a health and safety point of view it would be nice to see differant pairs who are responsable for there own stretch for eg Pear
Mill, Otterspool, and Brabyns just this small amount of effort would help to maintain, improve and keep the poachers off as well as keeping some of the more
expensive angling clubs away cos lets face it you wont get cheaper river fishing of this quality so come on guys lets stand and be counted its not just about
checking permits its also about giving advice to those who are less experienced from the younge to the old and this will help to protect and aid better fish
welfare which in my book is paramount, just the simple advice of go buy an unhooking matt can and will make all the differance to these magnificent Fish lets
all do our bit instead of just talking about it. Im on the River most days and I see Tony all the time so come on lets give him a lift.

Hi Jerry - it's a Normark Nirvana Light Carp/Big Barbel - 11'6" and comes with two tops (1.5lb and 2lb). Not been tested yet but feels fantastic
and a super slim blank. Shame about the lack of fish on the weir - must, as you say, have been the frost?
BBH - great post and fine sentiments. Ditto regarding the Feb bailiff; an extremely committed and hard-working chap. I'll try and get down to the river as often as possible to do my share. Dan - beauty? Was the chub that nice looking? Cheers, Rich |

Count me in will be checking at least once a week Is there any thing about being able to fish for trout with a worm on the goyt, that if true could put some anglers on the river. Any one trout fishing with the fly please PM me will be out with the fly myself . See you all next season. REMEMBER LOSE LIPS SINK SHIPS ? THE OILMAN |

you are allowed to fish worm only on the hook with a ledger, no swim feeders, no loose feed, and i,m informed spinners aswell and of course fly fishing just
for the sole purpose of catching trout. You are always going to get those anglers who flout the rules, more so now that the river is getting better and better.
BBH totally agree with everything you,ve said, ive been fishing on the goyt for 15yrs and live localish, i,d be more than happy to walk round pear mill and woodbank to deter close season poachers, maybe if anyones interested a few of us could meet up and do some cleaning and litter picking (work party)for a few hours on the odd day before the season re-opens, it will only go towards making our river better RICH many thanks mate i,m going to look out for a pair as they look like a great rod |

i agree with most of the things you say BBH but why would bailiffing be a conflict of interests. It didnt stop you checking my and my bro's licences,
ringing through to check and informing us of stockport fed ownership. Its not a conflict of interests at all, you could play a part as much as anyone else with
a full time job, the fact youve done a lot for the goyt anyway further proves that a knowledge base like yours would be useful to have in bailiffing and other
river issues. I will be down on the river quite a bit over the next couple of months but what would i do if i approached a few people who took offence in me
informing them it was closed season, other forum goyt anglers don't live as close as far as im aware and i'd be cautious about doing this on my own.
Also, why can't the stockport fed committee appoint designated areas different bailiffs, where does the membership money they receive every year go, in the coffers? In my other angling club the committee appoints the water officers and bailiffs on a volountary basis, and as a result they receive a discount on their subs card and then they give a report at each general meeting. What is wrong with a system like this? Rich, that chub was that nice looking. It was a beauty, still not up to my standards though Jerry is right about the worms, seriously not worth it though, in my opinion its just peoples greed, why cant they leave the river alone for a while to recouperate. You've got as much chance of catching a spawning barbel as much as anything else. And to think they could be doing away with closed season Didn't know i could lose my lips Oilman See some of you guys around the river soon. Dan

YES THATS DEFINATELY RIGHT ABOUT THE WORMS MATE, GOT TO BE LEDGERED THOUGH. NOTHING ELSE. SPOKE TO EA A FEW YEARS AGO AND JUST RECENTLY TO SEE IF ANY THING HAD
CHANGED. LIKE I SAID YOUR ALWAYS GONNA GET PEOPLE TAKING THE MICK MATE BUT HOPEFULLY IT WONT GET OUT OF HAND. I,M GONNA HAVE A FEW WALKS DOWN THERE ANYHOW HOPE
FULLY MIGHT DETER THEM IF PEOPLE KEEP CHECKING FOR LICENCSE,S AND FED CARDS

Hi all,
completely agree with most of whats been said, will be out on the fly most weeks so will be checking for people coarse fishing. As Jerry suggested i will also be walking the stretches i coarse fish, in the weeks leading up to the new season, gathering litter. just out interest what is the correct stance to take if one was to find someone coarse fishing with/without a licence? Politely inform them of their wrong doing? Ask them to leave? Louis

Dan Im not for one minute suggesting anybody to get into any unessasary confrontation and im not asking anybody to enforce the closed season or check Rod
licences yes of course you can ask somebody if they have a valid rod licence if you have one yourself and are able to produce it but you do not have the power
or the back up to enforce it only E.A Bailiffs or the Police have the powers to do this and you can rest assured that me and my colleagues shall be enforcing
the closed season as well as Rod Licence checks at every opportunity make no mistake about that.Getting back to the issue of Stockport Fed and Bailiffing all
im suggesting is that the more times that people get challenged as to whether they are Fed members then theres a good chance that they will become members and
at the same time send out a clear message that the River does get checked regular and deter poaching which none of us want im sure. As far as the conflict of
intrests is concernd my superiors would take a dim view of me carrying out Fed Bailiffing whilst on duty however im more than happy to check permits in my own
time and do so regularly in fact even if im on duty I will ask if thy are members and if inform them that they are on a club controled water if thats the case
where ever im working whether that be River,Canal or Stillwater the more people out there the better as far as im concerned.

Close Season | ||
|
Dan's raised a few interesting points, not least about the barbel's spawning period. There's well documented evidence suggesting that many coarse
fish spawn at very different times, sometimes outside the close season. I think this knowledge has largely contributed to the debate about keeping/losing the
close season on rivers. Is it an just being traditionalist and having an aversion to change which influences those who wish to keep the close season? Just
throwing that up for comment really. I'm happy with the status quo and having the three months to stoke other fires - though not particularly for the
right reasons, i.e. fish spawning.
Cheers, Rich |

No i know that Paul. I understand fully what you are saying and i agree. I would never try and move someone on from the river because i thought only the ea and
police and club in question can do it. Additionally i am not the sort of person to swan around putting pressure on mostly innocent people it has to be said to
move from the water.
I also know what you are saying regarding challenging. Again a lot of people are usually innocent, i myself amongst others were in that boat back in the summer and are now paid up fed members. Also, I have seen you quite a few times this season on one stretch alone and dont doubt that checks won't be carried out. I will be out on the river for an hour or two tomorrow, will have a walk i think as i havent got much else on. Anyone who wants to join me is free to. Rich. I'm definetly in favour for the 3 month closed season, thats all i know and couldnt imagine what it would be like without it after a few years. I think most of the spawning over the major river species does take place during the current closed season but i will stand to be corrected if this isnt the case. I know the evidence you are referring to, think it was the angling times a week or 2 ago? Dam |

Closed Season Fishing | ||

Hi Guys the spawning of fish is water temp related and most of the riverine species do spawn in the traditional close season as for doing away with it I for
one would be against it as for me its not just about fish welfare as you are unlikely to catch any species of fish if they are proccupied with spawning so fish
welfare isnt a issue but I do beleive that the banks do need a rest as does the wildlife from nesting ducks to the kingfisher as well as the flora and fauna.
But lets not forget that wealso have a cracking natural Trout River and to my knowledge one the best in the northwest with fish well in excess of 5lb which to
the fly fisherman are not to be sniffed at and I for one will be out over next couple of months with the dry's and hopefully achieve an ambition of mine to
catch my first Goyt Salmon on the fly along with some nice sea trout and no dought the odd chub and perch which will be returned unharmed as will any trout or
salmon im fortunate to catch if the lucks with me theres nothing like seeing the beauty of a river in early spring and summer than with a fly rod and a small
box of flys.Oh nearly forgot Ive been watching Barbel Spawn on the Goyt now for the last 4yrs and it is a truly awsome to sight and as I said earlier they are
so preoccupied that they dont even know your there amazing.
