Posts: 92 (02/03/08 18:57) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None Hello all Just wondered what everyones thoughts were on the sizes of fish caught in the hours of darkness!!! Do you think that fishing at theese times produces the larger fish, 'nocturnal' feeders or have you witnessed any patterns which would leed you to believe so? As i mainly fish in daylight hours and maybe an hour into dark i would hate to think i was missing out on the most productive times. I must admit that i am happy with my results for this season in terms of size and numbers of fish but after looking through the pics on the gallery i couldnt help noticeing the amount of 'large' fish caught at night all thoughts or oppinions greatly recievedor pm if you prefer ATB.....Jay Last Edited By: jayjay 02/03/08 19:03. I suppose its different on a small intimate river were you can select the largest fish in the swim. just wondered if light levels dictated the size of fish caught to any degree? Posts: 619 (02/03/08 20:50) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	hi jay,the trent can be and is a funny river at the best of times, in my experience its 50/50 as regards to day/night as they can feed at anytime really. i think a lot of it depends how pressured the fish are, how many anglers, how much bait gets thrown in and how big the barbel population is. and also with the trent you have the tide (if your fishing the tidal that is) cheers john

Posts: 94 (02/03/08 21:58) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Hi John,as i fish both the tidal and non tidal i have often wondered if its more productive to fish at night as there would be much less angling pressure in certain areas,and would think at the end of the day those larger specimens have seen it all before with regards to angling pressure,and may become nocturnal in their feeding habits?? wasnt really looking for river specific just a general picture of others result ;-) but thanks for the input. atb,,,Jay

I find an hour before to an hour after dusk to me the most productive. That's really only during the winter months though as I tend not to stay until darkness falls in the summer. What you see as night in a lot of the photos might really be late afternoon. If the flash is triggered, everything else tends to go dark. Rich

Also anytime when you turn you back for a few seconds also seems to work (I've lost count of the number of times the rod has wacked round as I have been packing up!). Having said that I know plenty of anglers who had their best fish in the afternoon. Gavin

Posts: 391 (03/03/08 20:54) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Very interesting topic, personally, fishing the lower thames, for the majority of the season I,ve found daylight hours to be by far the most productive, both in terms of numbers & size of fish. All my big fish(13lb +) have come in daylight and before 12noon. Lots of other anglers catch big fish after dark, but that is when the majority fishes!!! On small rivers then first hour(s) of darkness are often most productive, possibly due to the effects of bankside disturbance being reduced, but on large rivers the effects maybe work in a different way, boat traffic etc, stirs up the water, inducing fish to feed, some of my best catches have come during peak boating times, and not just on the odd occassion, but consistant!
