Posts: 1 (01/03/08 12:39) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None Hi Decided this year was the time to try and catch my first proper Barbel. I've had a couple of small ones from ponds in matches but really want to catch one from a river. I'm a member of York Amalgamation so my efforts will be on the Nidd from Skip Bridge up to the Railway bridge (unless I'm allowed to fish any further upstream). I have been for a few hours a couple of afternoons last week but no success, I was float fishing though and maybe the river was a bit fast for that. I do match fishing an carp fishing so I'm wonerding am i best taking my seat box and sitting it out in one place putting bait in and waiting for this fish to turn up or am i better with my carp rods and been a bit more mobile. I suppose and advantage with the carp rods is I can put 2 rods out thus increasing my chances. Also is legering better or will i get them on the float and what baits are best this time of year- pellets ? I'm assuming there are chub there as well ? If anyone can put me on a reasonable peg to give me a fighting chance then that would be appreciated too. Thanks Lee

If you have a read through the 'Articles' section on here it would save a lot of time. Also try posting on the Nidd thread in the river section and see if there's anyone on there who'd be up for taking you out for a session. A few hours with an experienced 'mentor' could save hundreds of hours reading. HTH Mark.

As regards approach it depends on what you are happiest doing. I prefer to fish to the conditions rather than go with a fixed idea. Saying that I could go with a plan as I could see the Ouse from my house and it was rare I didn't walk the dog along it's banks twice a day. Initially I would go with legering until you get more familiar with the swims and find those that lend themselves to float fishing. Trouble is that your post is too general if there is something more specific such as bait, rigs etc that would be useful for us to help you. Cheers Andy

There are plenty of books as well as articles on BFW and other sites. Being a carp angler and knowing they're (barbel) bottom feeders (the majority of the time) I would have thought it obvious that legering's a good method to start with. The above may sound harsh, Lee, but as Andy pointed out, your question's too wide-ranging. We all have to start somewhere and a bit of reading will make all the difference. Asking the odd question of anglers you see on the bank will also be helpful. On top of that, you already fish matches as well as for carp so you already take a varied approach. Cheers, Rich

Posts: 3 (01/03/08 19:49) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I appreciate what your saying and from reading the posts on the river Nidd it seems most people fish more than 1 swim per session so taking a mountain of kit to the river bank might not be the best idea. Perhaps I was just been a bit lazy and hoping someone who fishes the Nidd would tell me what swims and what methods are needed to catch there to take away some of the time factor as my sessions seem to be short and limited at the moment. The difficult bit is locating the fish. I fish a smallish river, though I don't know how it would compare to the Nidd, and have experienced quite a few blanks in this my first season after barbel. However, the first fish will have you hooked, especially if it's a decent size. Start with a basic setup and elaborate as you catch more and your confidence grows. Good luck. Rich

Yorkshire has some belting rivers, the Wharfe has a good head of barbel has does the Swale & there is a lot of good day ticket waters that produce. You'll be lucky to get actual peg numbers given on a open forum..good luck.
