have a pair of Wharfedale Ventana series 150 watts, love the sound, but pretty big and have em wall mounted. Missus wants to revamp the living room,an wants em
on the floor, but only feaseable place for em means one will be near the TV,an my prob is they are not magneticly shielded,an will pull the picture.

Howard , I have some Mission floor standers , about 6 years old , very good . I don't have any knowledge of their current range but generally good gear .
KEF is also good gear similar price range ,i.e mid price . I presume by floor standers you mean speakers on spikes rather than speakers on stands that are on
the floor , mine are the former . Stand speakers are also good , take up less room , bass may not be as powerful though . To be honest I would buy one of those
what HI FI mags and look to see what is reccommended in their surveys . Hope this helps

More advice please from hi fi techies | ||
|
Still not sure what im getting, but another technical question please.
My old but very nice sounding ventanas. can i use as rears,or as further speakers for my consevertory, will my amp run these as well as new floorstanding living room ones, wondered as they handle 150 watts each,an know jack about technicalities. My set up at the mo is,yamaha amp 135 watts, and powers my hi fi,and dvd surround, had the 150 watt ventanas as front (changing to floorstanding) have a 95 watts Yamaha sub-woofer,and a front (under tv) morduant short surround centre speaker. My rears are a pair of Warfedale diamond sevens (sounds great at the moment) on hi fi or surround. when having a party,or mates round,i flick a switch on the amp to add a pair of speakers in my consevertory which at the mo are a pair of Small Keffs .(though volume is not as loud as living room. So really wondered if i could switch (when i get new floorstanders) to use the old as possibly living room rears or,or use instead of Keffs in conservertory, wondered will my amp run 4 150 watts ones. Howard,
Don't bother with Bose - they're over-hyped & over-priced. Don't be fixated with floor-standers - they're not necessarily the best, esp. in this price range. Having said that, Monitor Audio make nice speakers: http://www.monitoraudio.co.uk/cms/uploads/userfiles/File/reviews/WHF%20BR5%20review%20April%2007.jpg The best thing to do is to find a dealer that will let you try speakers and return them if you're not happy. You can use your old speakers as rears. Don't worry about the wattage rating too much. Just try it and see how it works. R.

Robin. im afraid the fixation belongs to wifey.redesigning the room, new fireplace, carpet, ect.Though i think she may be right as on the wall they do tend to
stick out.Floorstanding is a compromise,as she wanted tiddly ones,but i like Bugguns

Howard
You need to know the Impedance (ohmns) of the speakers you are connecting to your amp and the rating of watts to ohms for your amp.Used to know how to work it all out but if you go on to AV Forums or a site like that with the info no doubt someone could work it out for you.Remember big watts doesn't necessarily mean big sound. What about Technosound in either Dunstable or MK,I'm sure they could help you out.Good one in Aylesbury as well but can't think of the name of it at the moment but could get hold of it if your interested. Did you perchance buy them from Superfi?
http://www.superfi.co.uk/index.cfm/page/moreinfo.cfm/Product_ID/3300 They look like nice speakers - certainly worth £400. But, you'll only know when you plug them in and listen! Good luck, R.

The 8000A is a good amp Dave.
Started my present system with one back in 95,then progressed to a 8000C/P pre /power combination Then added another 8000P to the set up,awesome sound with my Mission 753's. When I moved house my listening room became smaller so it did'nt shine so bright so now back to the 8000A used as the Pre and one Power amp but still happy Cheers Dave |
