Steve, Got to say well done for experimenting. That's the way we all learn new skills.

First thing about long exposure photography is that the long shutter speed causes blurring of moving objects. For that reason there is little point on taking long exposure shots of static subjects. You need some movement in the frame to show that it is long exposure.

If you went out on a dark night and set your camera up to photograph a church or other unlit building,and left your shutter open for a couple of minutes, your photograph would be very similar to one taken in daylight in the normal way. The amount of light entering the camera would accumulate to the same level as a brief exposure in brighter light.

What sets long exposure photography apart is the way that it renders moving objects and the contrast between illuminated areas and dark areas. You also get interesting colour casts from different light sources such as tungsten which shows orange, halogen which shows blue and so on.

What I would suggest is that you go out about half an hour before dusk and set your camera up on a tripod facing an area that has buildings, sky and moving traffic. Start taking your photos just as the sky starts to colour and take them in batches of three. If you have an exposure compensation feature set it at 0, -2 & +2 for your three shots. If you don't have exposure compensation set your cameras film speed setting to iso 200, iso 50 & iso 800. Then wait ten minutes and do the same. Repeat every ten minutes. Once the sky has lost its brightness you can go home and compare your images.

Because each image carries the exposure information in its file you can compare how the images have come out with the different settings.

No. It's a poor scan from a 35mm slide. You need a good scanner to reproduce night shots from trannys and I don't have one.

I also have some saturated blue sky / lake images taken on MF using Velvia that won't reproduce without noise.
