Dependable Hooks | ||
|
I was always a devotee of ESP Raptor Big T (teflon-coated) hooks, mainly in size 8 and 6 barbless; but that was only until I tried out the new FOX Arma Point
Range (three different patterns, also teflon-coated, in barbed and barbless). They are incredibly sharp (even after a session when I landed seven barbs on one
rig, the point was still needle sharp!) I prefer the curved shank pattern (again in 8 or 6) with a decent wide gape which, when tied on my usual hair-rig
presentation, tends to ensure that the point turns inwards even more than usual. Having landed doubles on them, in heavy water and snaggy, gravelly bottoms
they are also (so far) extremely strong. They are marginally more expensive than Raptors, but surely a few extra pence isn't in question if you are
attached to a fish of a lifetime and want to be sure to bank it safely and securely?!
I'm not claiming to be an expert/specialist, but if you haven't tried them yet, give them a go. You won't be disappointed. Cheers Roger |

Hi All,
I live in Leicester, near the A46, and am a member of Notts AA. I usually go to either Cliffton/Beeston area or Gunthorpe for ease of travel. Can anyone give me some venue/peg advice please? Mark. |

Latest Water Temps | ||

Anyone been out last night? Any idea of water temps? Did the recent cold snaps, snowfall etc affect them?
I was contemplating a session late afternoon/tonight, so any info before lunch-time would be a deciding factor. Cheers Roger |

What do you reckon it's going to be like on Saturday? There's a good chance I'll be going down that way!

Hi Paraman et al
Fished up "near Gunthorpe" last night (4.00-12.00pm). The river was still carrying about 5 foot of extra water, plus a deal of colour and I was obliged to use a 6 oz watch lead to hold still in the current. The shingle beach I usually sit on was well under water, of course. The water temp. stayed at a constant 44F all night (although I had fully expected a slightly better level considering the recent rainfall I spoke to an old guy, who was already there, on arriving who "hadn't caught a thing" ( and I reckon he must have left shortly after). Not to be downhearted however, I strode on for about 300yards and set up. I had my first barbel on my second cast (after about an hour) which really put up a rod-bending tussle in the strong flow, and it eventually weighed in at 8lb 12 oz The barbel must have had other ideas though, deciding on a short 3-hour feeding window, because I stayed there for another four-and-a-half hours without so much as a rattle on either rod Cheers Roger PS I nearly forgot, the level had dropped by just over foot by the time I left. PPS Good luck if you're out over the week-end. |

Sorry for a bit of a novice question, going to go to Beeston tomorrow and interested in two things:
Elips rod method? what are the elips in question? and as for river temperature, what is a bad, good and great temperature? Interesting about the lobs, I've been using glugged 14mm halibuts of late..... Mark. |

Hi again Mark
"Elips Rod Method?" It's all there in my PM of 3rd February. As for water temps. the generally accepted, absolute bottom-line reading is 42F (any lower and you might as well pack up and go home, or set up your deadbait gear for pike!!) Good (at this time of year would be 46F) anything over that would be great ANY time of year!! Grab yourself a Reuben Heaton Digital Thermometer (around £20) to check out whether you are wasting your time or not each Winter session. Roger |

Mark, The elips in question refer to a type of (shrimp-meal based?) pellet with a nice, `easy to superglue' shape..

just to clarify a bit about water temps the actual temp although important is not as important as the trend ie a rising or falling temp, as an example i have
known fish to be well on the feed at 40f but the day before the temp was 38f, but like wise you will struglle on any river at 46 if it was 48 the day before.

Hi Guys,
Six fish last evening, best a shade over eight pounds. four on ellips (thanks Roger!), two on Nutrabaits readymades salmon, caviar and black pepper (heavily glugged). Excellent evening, all fish coming between half five and half eight with not a sniff after.
