Posts: 145 (06/02/08 10:18) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None Hi guys Still relatively new to the Barbel scene so forgive if this sounds strange- but given all the chat about water temps etc - can you post what you think are the optimum weather conditions/water temps/high or low pressure/cloud cover etc to catch our friends??? i realise warmer or increasing water temps is clearly better given they are cold blooded but water about air pressure and when is that high/low and how does it effect. cheers

Different rivers can have varying results given the same conditions, and of course you then have different baits for different conditions. It's generally accepted in low clear water and high pressure the fishing is going to be more difficult but I've caught and witnessed other captures to double figures in these conditions. The only scenario where I won't venture out is when there is road salt going into the water or when there is a snow melt, I've no doubt some have caught under those conditions though. My favourite conditions are........flood water on the drop with the temperature rising. At the end of the day you need a bait in the water to catch, I'm sure over the years you'll find out when is the best time for you on your chosen river. Cheers Len

It's just generally accepted by most that low pressure equals a better chance of capture. Sorry I can't come up with the reasons. Len An afterthought, low pressure generally will mean rising temps which generally triggers fish to feed. ( cloud, rain and humidity in summer ) Last Edited By: Burybarb 06/02/08 16:20. Ok, that doesn't answer any part of your question. It's better that it's not too bright, so that means cloud cover. Cloud cover means the temperatures wont drop so much at night if your fishing late, but this is for your comfort, it won't affect the water of the fish. From the point of view of catching, my best day by far this season was on a day when it was absolutely hammering it down, on and off in spells, but really hammering. Obviously the pressure was low, but not sure whether it was the actual low pressure or the rain that the fish liked, and like it they certainly did But I just arrange a day and then go. Foolish at times this time of year, when I've been on the bank and would have more chance catching a cold - but wait, too bl##dy cold to be out and a barbel said yes, I'll have some of that, thankyou. Water temperature was low, so said a fellow angler who sat there mumbling about it being a waste of time. My one tip to you is to leave your thermometer at home, like I do these days. No point in knowing what the temp is when you're there, it'll only spoil it (although will give you a ready made excuse if you feel you need one ) Good luck paul4

If you can then fish when the temp is ideal then fine, but it won't of course guarantee a fish But if you just go fishing, with maybe a look at weather.co.uk or similar, the conditions are as the conditions are (if you see what I mean) so taking a temp makes no difference to you on the day. Just get out there, and hope , like most do. paul4
