Posts: 106 (27/01/08 23:23) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Like most of you now, I have also read that article in the Times, and it has got me and a friend thinking. We have both seen so many articles by this guy over the years, not just in the Times but other monthly mag's and the like. Now then, in every article that we can remember, this guy has completely kept location secret, i.e. no name dropping, give away photo's etc.The articles on Carp fishing on the Thames he did never disclosed location, and all pictures had a bush, or a field in the background, anybody's guess where that was ! So what baffles us is that why then in this article did he not just name drop, but have pictures with obvious landmarks in ?? We both agreed that one possibility is that maybe this article is designed to keep the masses away from the stretches that are showing up these 19lb+ fish. Not saying that the locations in the article do not hold fish of this size, but it would be quite a good way of diverting some attention away from other areas don't you think ? Maybe people were beginning to get close to discovering the areas where the huge lumps are ? By diverting anglers to an area that is renowned for large fish, it would ensure that the people might not actually go and fish the areas where some big girls live and where the potential record could come from... Anyway, food for thought really, we just found it bizarre that all of a sudden this chap discloses exactly where he was fishing and what has and can be caught there... It certanly made us think. Anyhoo, I had my first ever bash on the Loddon today, beautiful river I absolutely love it. To be honest I don't think the conditions were spot on for Barbel today with cooling clear weather, high pressure and a fining and more importantly cooling river, but I did manage a nice Chub and I missed another good bite, looked a Chubbey bite but you never know uness you hook them eh ??!.... I will certanly be back, as much as I love the Thames I also enjoy the more intimate rivers as well and am enjoying the distraction while the Thames is too angry. I hope it's not too long before I have my first Loddon Barbel... J

Take it from me there is not a 19Ib fish in this venue. Nor is there an 18 or 17, and yes you are right it could be diverting attention from other venues but the press will no doubt cover those at some point in time. They have in the past and no reason to think they will not go back. What the AT and AM have discovered is that there are a few barbel in the Loddon and one or two are double figures. They have sensationalised this because that is what the press do. But it was hardly a secret before this. They just have to fill their pages up with whatever sells copy. If they do get to the 20 mark then in all the other rivers they will be hitting the 25 mark. Who wants a 20 when theres a 25 on offer?( yawn ) The circus might visit but the circus is likely to be very dissapointed. Like all circuses it will pack up and leave town in a few weeks when it finds that there is no pot of gold at the end of the rainbow and that actually this is quite a hard river to crack. Not to mention no day tickets/exchange tickets and limited parking. I have had a million phone calls from a million anglers bemoaning the fact that they have failed to catch a barbel on 4 or 5 and sometimes more occasions. What to do? Some people have already informed me they will not be joining next year due lack of barbel action but I do not expect to read about that in the AT. I have seen the articles before that named this venue and it does not take long to get back to normal. If it ever really gets away from normal. Interesting to read that Mr Welch ( AM article ) clearly states he turned up at this venue with soaking wet tackle, thus flouting the rule that prohibits this. We just thought it might have been a bit of a ploy, I have heard some 'rumours' that a couple of 19lb Barbel were caught last week on the Loddon though..... I have quoted your comment about the AM article, I saw this as well and I remember reading that Ian turned up with sopping wet gear. Now correct me if I am wrong but I presume that this rule is the prevention of further outbreaks of Foot & Mouth on this venue ? The Loddon is a difficult beast as I learned yesterday, but my Barbel buddies have had a couple recenlty, nice fish too, and I know I am going to have to put a bit of work in to reap the rewards, so fingers crossed ! J

There was a huge outbreak of KHV a CEMEX Burghfield which is just a few kilometres away from SE. They suffered quite a large fish kill. This is why FAS introduced the rule across all venues and applied a zero tolerance to it. Rumours rumours...LOL , thats just the word from the scamps around the camp fire! Not at SE try another part of the Loddon. Yep it does require some work, and tackle up accordingly. Small snaggy river with a few tricks up its sleeve. What with the combination of the first barbel for ages, the dark night, the excitement of christening a new net, plus setting the camera up, and forgetting your glasses... all of these things conspired to you totally missing the unhooking mat which was on the grass by your side wasn't it!! Unfortunately a heavy week of work was playing on my mind and I just could not get motivated.Suffered a hook pull from a suspected chub and packed up after barely two hours on the bank - which I regret now!
