I took young lad out with me and my son today who has been trying to catch a barbel all season without success and had a good couple of hours chatting and trying to help out in his quest but to no avail. Anyway lets see if we can list some simple top tips for all you learners out there....p.s. this should be all of us... 1. Winter baits never rule out spam probably one of the best winter baits around... And so on and so forth..... Please add your own....

Target barbel when conditions are more likely to yeild a successful outcome ie low pressure, coloured water and rising water temps and avoid sudden cold snaps, falling water temps and clear conditions unless targeting other species like chub or pike. Bit of generalisation but even the best barbel anglers fishing with the best rigs and baits will struggle to catch unless the conditions are right at this time of year. Dimbers

Find somewhere where there are loads of barbel until you get your confidence, don't get dragged into the hype of baits,rigs and tackle, the simplist gear will catch loads of barbel. Join the Barbel society joinior section it cost £7 and for that you get. (nicked from the B.S. site.) Two superb Barbel Fisher magazines packed full of interesting articles, and if you feel adventurous, you can have a go at writing your own piece for the magazine · four informative newsletters, with our own junior section that often includes competitions with great prizes. · access to a fantastic members only forum, where you can ask questions and read tips about fishing. · the chance to attend FREE junior fishing days on great Barbel rivers, where you can receive instruction from some of the countries top Barbel anglers. · you also get the chance to attend regular regional meetings and FREE entry into the Barbel Society annual conference, where no junior walks away empty handed. · The junior section also allows you to meet and become friends with other juniors interested in fishing for Barbel. It's well worth the money only wish there was something like this when I was young.

After all you are there to try and catch a Barbel not feed them. Walk the Banks in the close season on a sunny day searching , with Polaroids glasses on. Location is half the battle. Also, it ain`t a race so just enjoy the journey. By three methods we may learn the wisdom to catch barbel: First, by reflection, which is noblest; Second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest.- (Apologies to Confucius!)

If a Barbel is hungry and you are there with a decent bait then you've got every chance - don't feel you've got to have the latest fancy bait. Spam catches plenty, as do worms and maggots.

Don't use lightweight line in the hope of buying a bite. Rig your gear up in the back garden without a hook & tie the hooklength to something strong, with the reel clutch slack give the rod some serious bending and tugging until the clutch gives line, progressively tighten it until the line eventually snaps then back the clutch off a set number of notches. Learn the best knot for each part of your rig. When he comes you've given yourself the best chance of netting him (so take scales & camera if you want a permanent record.)

Watercraft is the most important thing in long term consistent success. For ANY fish. Keep it simple, try and use your instincts as much as possible, and don't get bogged down with the stupid carp that people tell you that makes up 99% of fishing websites and the angling press. If you find feeding fish, watch them and learn how they feed for as long as you can, then return at dusk with your tackle.
