Posts: 448 (16/12/07 10:02) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None In the Historic Gallery there is a photograph of a barbel taken at Penton Hook in the early 60s. I started my barbel fishing there and at that time. John Paine I remember the swim in the photo very well and had some success there and thereabouts, Is there anyone who fished there in the 'forgotten' 60s and does anyone fish there now? Posts: 315 (18/12/07 20:43) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Don,t know about the sixties, but I,ve fished it on & off for the last 20 years or so, caught plenty of barbel/chub etc, but to this day the place doesn,t seem to produce barbel of the same calibre as most other areas! I,ve heard of the odd fish over 8lb, but that is very unusual, big chub now thats a different story(8lb 5oz this season), and at times plenty of carp. peter

Peter The chub sound absolutely brilliant and twice the size that we would have been happy with in the 60s. I never caught a carp at the 'Hook' John The dace fishing used to be very good as was the roach fishing from the 'Reeds' in the main weir Jackpiker We have very similar feelings on Penton Hook and I had not realised that Neil Harding-Deans fished there. We used to travel from Old Windsor 2-up on my mates motorbike and as it didn't have a stand, park it against a tree in what I think must have been someone's garden and fish the weirpool. I cringe now when I think of that, but apart from scrumping occasionally (usually in season) that was about the worst of what I got up to as a lad. Didn't actually catch anything but I remember putting lobworms on my mates hook for him because he wouldn't touch them. Happy rose tinted days. Phil

Back in the seventies there were more barbel in the 3-4lb class, did'nt catch any then but my brother did and he nevers lets me forget that! Still fish there today, loved to proved wrong

Posts: 7556 (20/12/07 17:13) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Hugo, the carp were coming from the fishery pit which was the other half of Penton hook marina, there was no barriers and the fish travelled/travels freely to and fro from there directly into the thames, there is still a shoal of large carp in the marina and are a common sight around the fuel jetty area, nowadays the marina has full control of the pit overall and there is no fishery, maybe the growth of the carp and increased numbers over the past 3-4 decades has pushed a lot of the barbel further downstream, as far as i am aware there is a barbel nursery area created by the EA in the weir area, i love the place, those dace used to show up from wheat sheaf lane to the cooling outlet area....j.w john walker

The bulk of this stretch is largely unfished for most of the year and the fish are still there, big ones too!!! peter

Some very good fishing to be had if you can get the swims,and it was only about £30 a year. The only down side is,you can't fish before 7am,and finish about 8-9pm as it was when i fished the weirs. At penton you could catch Barbel on the steps by the up stream gate of the lock,down stream to just pass the intake. I have not fished there for about 3-4 years,but it is free fishing,or was,above and below the lock,up stream to Staines,and down stream to Lalham,about four or five miles of under fished water. Bob.
