Oh no, stillwater barbel... |

Did anyone see the episode of 'The Complete Angler' on Sky Discovery at the weekend? Jeffrey Palmer and Rae Borras visited some colleage for fishery
managers and river keepers in Sparshot I believe. The college had its own lake which the two presenters fished, one of whom caught a barbel of about 2 - 3 lbs.
If a college teaching fishery management/river keeping condones stocking barbel in a lake can it be so wrong?

I agree. This can of very old worms opened once again.......
"A mound of earth on Walton Breck Road was created for the growing numbers of fans to watch the team. It was called the 'Spion Kop' after a
battle in the Boer War six years earlier. It was not the only Kop - low hill in Afrikaans - nor the first. But it would become the greatest......."

of barbel welfare,
commercial angling investments and profits spring to mind, aint gonna get into any slanging match about these comments i make about this, i have said what i think and do not wish to reply to any possible baiting on this subject, any barbel enthusiast with the species welfare at heart knows its wrong, end of comment....j.w |

John - that's the whole point of why I started this thread. If the country's leading college on fishery management and river keeping stocks barbel in
its own still water venue does that not tear holes in the 'stillwater harmful for barbel' argument? Don't get me wrong, I don't like the idea
of fishing for barbel in lakes - it just doesn't seem right. But does it harm them? No doubt many on here would say 'yes it does' and I
would have agreed. But I have to assume that a college teaching fishery management knows better than I.

Richard - why the need to assume that the college knows best, they are in the business of selling places to groups or individuals to become fishery managers and the whole idea of any management position is to make money for your company from your chosen profession. The fish and the ethics of whether they should be in still water or in rivers are secondary to the purpose of their training. I would like to think that any barbel angler would wholeheartedly agree that this is wrong, but as I've just said above its in their commercial interests to do so. Alan |

I think you will find one of the main reasons for barbel to be stocked into the college lakes is to assess their suitability in still waters.
I was gobsmacked when I heard they had barbel in the lakes but speaking to some of the lecturers there you realise there is method in what appears to be madness. Only with controlled 'experiments' like this will we ever know for sure if barbel in stillwaters is such an issue. I am personally against barbel in still waters but that is purely my opinion. The college (I believe) are trying to put facts to the arguments, for or against. Darren. |

I'm sorry, I thought we all valued healthy and informed debate and that BFW was a forum to share opinions. To my mind many of the posts on here are futile
and pointless. But I don't make a point of telling people because I accept that a post that may be boring to me may be extremely interesting to another.
Yes, the subject of stillwater barbel has come up before. Usually the comments are rants about "how wrong, barbel welfare, it shouldn't be
allowed" - it all gets very emotional. And, frederick, I actually think that we do not need to agree to disagree as I believe the vast majority (me
included) are of the opinion that barbel in a still water is not a good thing. But, I repeat, I posted on this subject because I
thought it might add some interesting fresh content on the subject. We all assume that putting barbel in a lake is bad for their health. I have always thought
that. I don't know why I think that. I don't have any informed opinion on it, just an instinctive one. So when I see a TV programme in which a fishery
management college stocks barbel in a lake I have to ask myself if my instinctive opinion is wrong (and perhaps that of many others as well) on the basis that
"if a fishery management college is willing to stock barbel in a lake it can't do them any harm". The comments from darrensm and 4spoke are
interesting and add new perspective on this point, especially that from darrensm. I don't have to agree with them (not saying I do, or don't) but they
do make a contribution.

Hi Everyone,
Just in case anyone thinks we (BS) have forgotten all about this let me just say that Pete Reading has recently met with the EA regarding a number of issues, obviously this was one of them and we have agreed with them a statement reaffirming our stance. This is a long haul but I'm certain that the eventual outcome will be what the huge majority of barbel anglers would like to see. |

Can you share the statement Steve?
