Agree with you on the weight averages, especially the chub. I've fished the river for over 20 years and never had one over 4.8 and that was a massive looking fish that if you would have thought was well over 5lb

Even if by average chub you really mean average chub caught using normal barbel style tactics its still less than 2lb. Hardly anybody weighs chub properly - they are a very hollow/light fish anyway and the Dane ones especially so. I get utterly fed up of endless people telling me they had a five pound chub the other day from such and such a swim. Yes they are there but if more anglers weighed their chub properly there'd be a lot less!You will get very frustrated if you are expecting 3 to 4lb average chub. My view is don't 'call it', either weigh it or shut up!

Posts: 386 (23/11/07 11:03) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Let me give you an example: A friend, a very good and experienced angler with forty years of chubbing under his belt and with (weighed!) fish to a fraction under 6lb to his name, was out on the river last week, travelling light, roving with trotting tackle. He rang me from his mobile with the news that he'd had a monster chub but with no scales or camera would I come and weight it for him. I made the hours round trip and was stunned by the size and beauty of what was a great fish. It looked well, well over 6lb. What did it weigh? Bang on 5lb, that's what. I guarantee that two thirds of Dane anglers I meet would have been casually claiming at least a six pounder and possibly even a seven. Take your scales, weigh your fish accurately and then show us your 'averages'!

I think Sunday is set fair - but Sarturday is cold - has anyone been down last month or so ?

Posts: 288 (23/11/07 15:14) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Just my personal experience but fishing the river since 1983 I know I have had just one 4lb + chub and none over 4.08. When I first fished the river I deliberately fished for them not barbel and the fish were between 2lb and 3.12; average say 2.08. This was upstream of the M6. Dave Costello in those days was of the opinion that the chub below the M6 on the Byley stretch were bigger than that and I respect that view. I think the average size of chub (and barbel) has dropped and above the motorway the chub now average around 2lb. I certainly agree they are as a species "hollow" fish. I have a pb from the Dorset Stour of 7.10 which was an empty fish even in February. Last week I had a chub on the H Avon and my friend wanted me to weigh it to see how big a 5 it was...it was a 4.04 ! It is still my view that chub (and now barbel) are of a bigger average size below the M6. As for barbel, in the 1990's my average fish was around 4lb. Now I really struggle for fish over 5lb. I have had 70 barbel so far this season virtually all less than 4lb. I would say the average weight (almost entirely due to the Barbel Society stocking) is now no more than 2.08. However, again this is above the M6 and my opinion is the fish have a higher average weight below the M6.

Posts: 7 (23/11/07 20:16) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Not all the chub were weighed,just the larger ones,with two over 4lb.Didnt need to weigh the rest as iv been fishing long enough to guestimate with a fair degree of accuracy.I have never caught a chub over 3lb from the middle Dane but have found the fish on the lower river below the A556 recently to be a bigger stamp ,were I repeat virtually all of the chub I have caught have been 3-4lb.If people on here have difficulty accepting/believing this I really couldnt give a ****.

Posts: 3338 (23/11/07 20:39) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	i have no problem whatsoever with your catches Tincaman, i too have fished that area on a fairly regular basis over the last few years, have caught Chub to mid 4`s with maybe half a dozen over the 4 lb stamp whilst the very vast majority were\are around the 2 1\2 to 3 lb mark, never caught a Barbel over 7 lb`s down there with the average, maybe, somewhere around 4 lb`s or possibly even a little better, the middle river in my opinion does hold the better stamp fish but no where near approaching the stamp mentioned on the previous page of this thread, the comment earlier about large looking hollow fish is very valid to the river edit..magority became majority

I was commenting on the general nonsense talked by a lot of Dane anglers about chub sizes. It's just not fair on new/visiting anglers who get completely the wrong impression about likely catches. Posts: 8 (24/11/07 20:15) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	No worries Kev,I know what you mean regarding chub being lighter than they look and it is important not to send out wrong info to new anglers to the Dane about average sizes of chub/barbel.These chub have been out of the ordinary for me on the river and im putting it down to fishing a new stretch were the chub seem bigger than further upstream.Maybe the fish arent any bigger on this stretch and im fishing methods/baits that are taking the bigger fish only,I dont know,maybe anglers who have fished the NAA stretch below the A556 more than me can say if the chub are bigger here than elsewhere?

Posts: 36 (24/11/07 21:55) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	i find it strange that people who fish the dane seriously think that it holds a large head of relatively small chub,it holds small,medium and large chub in large numbers because it still is a chub river first and foremost,it too has a thriving population of young and old barbel. due to work committments i've only been on the dane once this year back in august,one 2lb barbel,one 4lb 3oz chub,both taken on boilie and both weighed. i have fished the dane since the late 80's with my brother,he holds our personal chub record of over 6lbs,my best is 5lb 8oz. my biggest barbel is 9lb 6oz,his is 9lb,we have both lost doubles and some seriously big chub. i have personally weighed and photographed two doubles and know the captor of a truly outstanding specimen barbel caught 2 years ago. my time is limited but if i had the time i'd be out there because once you feed off the smaller fish the dane holds some real surprises. there are lots of 2 to 3lb fish but theres plenty of 4's 5's and 6's to keep the chub fisherman interested.

As you are no doubt aware Lymm losing Manor was a considerable blow. But as you know from the Lymm board Daisybank has potential - its just that ist not a regularly fished as it could be. Lymm regulars did fish Manor and did land some decent fish - ask Cliff. I know you've just joined Lymm this season - if its not too difficult a step, join BM as well next opportunity which gives you three extra stetches of the Dane - but you won't beat that monster you had out of the Severn !

I myself over the years have had some "VERY" big Chub out of the bottom stretch. 5lb 12oz on opening day of the season is my best many years ago from the "Favorite" swim. (first cast). Over time I myself have lost bigger. And just to tidy up the topic the bottom does in my opinion hold a bigger stamp/quantity of 4 to 5lb fish. thats from Warrington Anglers waters right down to Northwich's on the lower I have fished nearly all the club waters. But saying that THAT IS ONLY MY OPINION. Others have theirs. Thats what fishing is all about.
