Dr Mark Everard... Roach on the BA ... |
Lead | |
|
Going to start a campain to catch a 2lb roach off the Bristol Avon tomorrow. I have noticed in the angling rags, a said Dr. Everard is consitantly catching
braces of huge roach on the B.A. with nothing more than quiver tipped bread in a cage feeder. He also has a book out. Anybody read it ? Would it be a good
purchase ? At £35 plus P&P it could be a major part of my Christmas list.

Adam,...
I think Seagry is syndicated now,...they have tied up a lot of water in that area,..not sure how much they are charging,.know a couple of guys that fish it,..but are both `fluff chuckers`,....nice water if you can get on it though,..although. as others have stated,..there is the free stretch at Malmesbury,..and The Amalgamation have Daniels weir which has produced a 3lb `er.... Have been looking around in those area`s myself,....let me know how you get on,..am finding it difficult to get out lately,.due to work etc. cheers... |

Cheers Brendon,
Have fished Daniels Well a few times and produced some nice Roach, have seen the 3lb'er that was caught there, think its on the Amalglamation site! Also caught Pike to 8lb, Carp to 6-lbs Chub to 4lb and Some great Perch! Am hoping to get back there this winter to do a bit of Roaching, who knows what might turn up! Cheers Adam |

Well the roach fishing was a disaster... fished upsteam of Chippenham. Only had one about eight oz. On the other hand the chub where "mad for it",
nine chub up to 4lb. Liquidized bread and a drennan flake punch. Quality fishing for 37p worth of bait. ...
Ordered a copy of the good doctors book so might be able to improve on my eight oz fo far this winter |

One other thing
Where is the free stretch at Malmsbury... I fish mainly at night on my own so I like to select remote places away from people. I believe Chippenham free stretch can be a bit dodgy at night. Regards Monkey |

Seagry was lost as the new owner of Seagry Mill or the opposite house didn't like anglers. He just gave anglers abuse unreasonably on the occasions I
encountered him. It's true some anglers left some litter and it was quite popular. I understand the Amalgamation gave up the lease, though it's only
rumour, and I can't recall any bridges up there that affected it.
Upstream of Seagry Weir is Somerford Fishing Association, about £300 notes a year, and then you have to be proposed & seconded. They also have 2 lakes in Great Somerford behind the pub. You may be able to get the secretary's name and contact details from Premier Angling and ask the pertinent questions. Kris |

Northernmunkey not catching a two or three pound Roach on your first visit is not a disaster it is what to expect. Catching Big Roach is one of the toughest
tasks in British Coarse fishing, doubly so on rivers.I would adjust your sights and the blanks or lack of Big Roach will become easier to take.Big Roach are
totally different to double figure Barbel or twenty or thirty pound Carp. They are not stocked or commonplace but very rare , precious as well as demanding a
large degree of angling skill to catch. Good luck though I hope you catch your dream fish.

Use really cheap sliced bread , it must have a sticky tackly feel to it and use the punch to form pellets of flake.Failing that get a few slices of white and steam over a kettle till they go tacky, place in a plastic bag and put under a heavy weight overnight. This will punch out really well , medium sliced by the way.Keep it in the bag between casts. If you double punch you will get a tight pellet of flake that expands really well in the water and stay on the right hook.Use a longish hook length , 18 inches is a good start, with a number six shot a few inches from the hook . A nice hook for this is a Kamasan B520 in size 12 or 10.For the feeder mashed bread can fill the fish up too quickly and Chub love it. Try punch crumb or liquidised bread. The commercially sold punch crumb has very little feed in it and is cheap considering he amount you will use. Add a little crushed hemp to it. Tight lines

Rutilus is right. Conditions have to be spot on to catch river roach. Sometimes you have perfect conditions, high with a little colour, and they won't be
feeding. Turn up a week later, same conditions and you can bag up on them. One thing I would say though is when you go, make sure there is a little colour in
the water (unless fishing test ot itchen). AR

Gents,
Thanks again for the tips... Putting a small shot on the line looks a good idea because I was sure the hook wasn't enough weight to cause the bread flake to sink. I was going to get some small drennan barbel hooks as they look to have a thick gauge wire. I think I have some B520 from my match fishing days Regards Monkey |

He's done it again.... Reported in the A.T. The Dr. has now caught 550 two pound plus roach. Quite an achivement I think.
My book has arrived and my wife has wrapped it up before I could read it... Monkey |
