I cut my barbel teeth on the Thames around Windsor many years ago and cheese was the bait of choice. It outfished sausage meat as I remember which was the
other going bait at the time. Also used to pick up some stonking roach and chub. In fact, I became a bit obsessed with cheese as bait and found it to be
excellent for tench and carp on the local lakes. I keep meaning to give cheese a serious go with the barbel that must be getting fed up with pellets by now.

Years ago, when I was a lad an old timer showed me some fine roach he'd caught on cheese. I used it for trotting on the Bristol Avon and River Chew and
caught some fine roach. Took it on the higher reaches of the Avon and caught chub and roach. In later years (1980's) when the barbel bug really got to me I
used it for barbel and caught quite a few, along with some fine chub.

Bisterneman, I think the cheese you refer to is Mexicana, a sort of Red Leicester with chilli bits. I have never used it but recall Steve Stayner writing about
it's virtues for Barbel in a Coarse Fisherman a while back.He did mention Chub not being so keen, sounds strange but you never know.Perhaps Mr Skin who has
obviously used it can let us know.

Bgit, interesting what you say about Roach.I presume you were using quite small cubes and fed sparingly? |

I used to use a spicy cheese paste years ago on the Kennet (before the days of the pellet).

Bisterneman, wasn't laughing at you personally, just the idea of chub turning their noses up at cheese and spice.
I confess I've never tried it and probably never will. I think the author was basing his judgement on "sparse" or "skewed" evidence! In my experience both species like cheese-baits and heavily-spiced baits. I also found that the Roach loved cheddar. Shame there wasn't a big enough one around to take the size chunk I had on the hook. I doubt there's a bait that could catch one and deter the other! And if there is, I wouldn't want to use it. |

Hi All
Never though i would have this many replies on Cheese as Bait. Have enjoyed reading about your catches on the bait and a lot in the past. Maybe as it not fished that much now they will not shy away from it. Going to give it a go.
