barbel yet it looked overgrown and unfished.Im not after any hot pegs or tactics,il hopefully suss that myself,i just want to know if there are many barbel in
there,whether anyone has fished it before and what catches they had and is it worthwhile putting the effort in.Any help would be appreciated..

Why is that? | ||
|
With regard to above query anybody any ideas on why it is that the downstream end of the Dane seems so difficult? Is it that the serious barbel length of the
Dane(the middle reaches from below Holmes Chapel weir) has enough weirs and shallows to create the aeration needed for example and that is maybe lacking
further downstream?
On the face of it in general the river looks more barbelly the further down you go (if only because its 'bigger') yet we hear relatively little about it. Is it because its underfished, or because those who do keep it (understandably) quiet or do folks have any other theories? As Mrs Merton used to say, "Let's have a heated debate"! |

Slippy,
I've fished the Dane probably like most folk up to and around J18/M6. Its only this season I've ventured upstream to'ther side of HM. I only took a match rod and maggots and had a very nice time too with small chub, grayling, dace and minnows. The character of the river is different as there are not so many of the deeper holes we associated with barbel. The water quality must be good with so many grayling and weirs. There are lots of streches of shallows and even this summer they were (still) shallows. Seems there have been notes of catches of v small barbel in this area. I suspect the water will support the fish but not in so many numbers - also a factor is that barbel (the size and numbers) are only a recent factor in the middle reaches last 5 years or so (or is it my ability?). This months CF magazine notes Tony Miles (is it on the Avon) catching barbel from stretches I could jump across - well almost Bob |

Kevin - I live very close to the lower Dane but only casually fish it in this area. In character its also very sandy and weed appears to be lacking. Even
during low levels the river tends to be coloured. Such conditions may effect spawning opportunities below the A556 weir and as a result natural recruitment may
only occur from further upstream during conditions of high flood water?
It's not just Barbel that are lacking, you can flick a piece of bread under a bush that screams Chub but the tip remains motionless. Personally I know others whom have fished this area and I honestly don't believe that anyone is bagging up. This said if you like a challenge and enjoy the banks being quiet then it could be the place for you? You're also just as likely to catch a stray carp of bream which enter from the Weaver confluence at Northwich. Neil |

All the information iv gathered so far about the stretch 'below the cemetery'and from the A556 downstream in general is it does have barbel but nowere
near as prolific as the middle reaches and can be a tough water.Its a shame really because it looks excellent with lots of deep runs and features.The fact it
looks so overgrown and unfished possibly tells its own story regarding fish stocks compared to other parts of the Dane further upstream.

Tincaman, Got cut off in mid stream earlier. Also consider that there are about a dozen contributors to this noticeboard, if we are members of clubs predominately of
the mid and upper reaches (Lymm, BM, PAAS and WDAA) you may get a slanted view of where we catch. We did have a chat a couple of pages back about the stretches
into Middlewich and MAA, but I got the impression no one really knew who owned what past Middlewich and into Northwich.

Tinc. I myself was a member of Davenham & Northwich for many a year. But now switched to BM. Well worth it. Even at times now I wish I had kept my
Northwich card. But we must all move on as they say.
But to your question. The lower does hold a good head of Barbel albeit around the 3 to 7lb mark. the latter being rare. Also the odd bigger one shows up now and then, but very scarce. I fished the stretch below the A566 bridge very heavy for the last 5 years and one thing I will say about the place is that it is more of a Chub paradise than a Barbel. It holds some monster Chub. If you need some area info send me a PM. Will gladly pass on any info that will help you in your quest. |

Tinc........BM membership was if I remember correctly from Feb of each year. A quick call to the secretary whose number is on the website will clear that one
up for you.

Help please | ||

Hello All
I am coming up to spend a weekend with a friend next weekend and we are getting out on the Dane for a day. Could someone please advise as the best approach for some general fishing. Jurgen,
Not quite sure if I can be too much help. To the east of the M6/J18 the river is a good trotting river for grayling and they have been showing in numbers earlier in the year. The river from J 18 into Northwich shows some good barbel catches. I'm not sure of any day ticket streches - I think Middlewich Anglers may have them on the bank (see this thread 2 - 3 pages or so back). Maybe call a local shop - Dave's of Midlewich and they can advise - tight lines. |

James, Suggest you register for access to the PAAS website. You can then see lots of discussion about their various waters on the message board. Steve

James, You lucky boy ! I'm not 100% on PAAS waters - but they do own alot of the opposite bank to Lymm & Baymalton which is mainly the river to the west of
the M6 at J18. PAAS own alot of the RHS as the river runs downstream towards Northwich from J18.
