(Not been here since the dawn of BFW time) An interesting point was made in the 'Opinion Vs Opinion' section of the Angling times this week regarding 'Fish records' and naming fish.. IMO the naming of fish such as those in well known 'specimen' waters smacks of 'tweeness' and encourages oppressive angling.. Everyone one gunning to catch 'Teardrop' 'Two-tone' or 'Benson' etc..etc.. With the current British record barbel now deceased; 'The Traveller'......... (See what I mean?!) Do you think it adversely effects the welfare and the way species are fished for by some? The guy in AT who isn't particularly pro records, pretty much echoes my sentiments on the subject.. Your thoughts... '..Early morning/late evening, One man....his rod....his anticipation, and the river'

(just an example)

The press already screw things up by calling Roach red fins, Perch stripies, Orfe carrots, Bream slabs, Pike predators etc.,etc. Whats wrong with the English language? [and/or Latin names] Mike

That's of course if you are interested in what you catch, when, how, conditions, time of year etc etc. Sorry but it does help to understand the habits of the fish, rather than rely on what people think or say. We can all read other peoples opinions, but learning for yourself is much more intimate and rewarding. Bob

As much as we would like to think otherwise, there aren't masses of huge uncaught barbel swimming around in our rivers - especially the smaller ones, so it is quite likely that when you do catch a biggie, it may have been caught before. On heavily fished venues, this will come to prominence moreso. There also seems to be alot of hypocrisy and "snobbishness" surrounnding captures of named fish when there shouldn't be - it is each to their own in barbel fishing, and as long as the anglers are not causing harm, what does it matter what they catch? A good example of complete ignorance regarding this topic (naming fish/recaptures, etc.) was when I met a guy fishing (the stretch to be revealed soon...) who was quick to show me a fish that he had caught from the Medway - a real beast at over 14lbs. Now, I instantly recognised this fish having seen it in the press (also take into account that I have never fished the Medway) but this wasn't a problem and I congratulated the guy as it was a truly maginificent fish. We then got chatting and I told him about some of the rivers I fish (Wensum, being the main topic). Immediately he showed his lack of understanding when he was telling me that everyone on the Wensum is fishing for the same fish that are named (even though his fish from the Medway was too!) and that he couldn't understand the logic behind catching known fish. He carried on (as I tried not to laugh) about some ill-informed stuff regarding the river (which I wont go into as I'll be here for days...) then started putting the Gt. Ouse to rights with similar weightless arguments. But, the cream of it all was that I bumped into him whilst he was busy fishing the Royalty stretch of the H.Avon - a stretch that is hugely famous and known by literally all barbel anglers as are the fish inhabiting the stretch. Suffice to say, I didn't waste my breath trying to talk sense, instead I walked off gobsmacked by the fact that some people really don't have a clue...

Almost disagree with that sweeping statement, however, there are stretches where the big girls are rarely caught and those that do catch them, rarely, keep stumm. There are also stretches of river which just...... just don't get fished often enough to yield the true picture of what is swimming about. The Wensum (well certain stretches) on the other hand has been systematically targeted by, well...........those that you would not waste your breath on Joe ?? Bob
