Hooklength Material |
Lead | |
|
Anyone throw some experiences with hooklength material they use. I myself am having a torrid time with the odd ones I am using. Spent some time and money in
the tackle shop today trying to gain some confidense with a new product for me called "FOX SPECIALIST SOFT STEEL" has anyone tried this and if so.
What do you think.

Hi Brian.
Depends on conditions and your own personal preferance, I make mine up on the bank to suit and carry several variaties 90% of the time its a fluro or supple mono x-line, korda iq or preston reflo. Im not keen on braids or coated braids, as i said its a personal thing based on confidence. Ross |

Fox steel is mono
Nothing wrong with it at all, been using as mainline with the occasional combi link and is recommended. Soft, supple, abrasive, good colour etc etc. For coated braids you'll get 101 different opinions but my all time fave for barbelling is Kryston Mantis gold. |

May I just say that I myself put it all down to confidence, but nice to here other peoples prefrences. Over the last couple of months I have been reading up
about Spiderwire stealth for my hook lenghts. But try getting hold of it. Very Rare.
Anyway you are the guys in the thick of the action and your matreial options will give me food for thought.
On the Royalty this weekend for 3 days, hopefully my new Fox soft steel with BOOST my season or start it for that matter. All you Avon boys, Have you any hot spots to help. Only kidding to me the place
magical and any swim can produce to my FOX line I HOPE.

I've used long mono hooklinks (big game) and they work.
I've used short coated braids (snakebite) with a backlead and they work. Finding the fish is the main challenge; if you find them and they are feeding, irrespective of whether you used either of the above, I think you'd catch. |

Doc, I totally agree with you, I seem to find them then spook them. And I am convinced it my hook lengths. I myself dont think its any other reason. Had a good
patch last year on stuff called PUDDLE PIG (6lb)which was classed as a method feeder line. But even that stuff now casts my doughts.

What else in your rig might they be spooking off Harty? Can you actually see them spooking? If so maybe check your lead, swivels and hook? It might not be the
line....just a thought...I have found clear mono to be good and if I am using braid I like to use a back lead to pin the rig down. I use matt leads, dull
finish hooks and I bury my matt swivel in a dull green bead. Anything to stop shine and reflection...

" fox steel is mono"
So what exactly is the question? There is very little difference between most monos. In fact most they are all made in the same handful of factories and just marketed under different brand names. Cahal

Doc, quite a few sessions I am free lining, so that narrows it down to Hooks & Presentation of Bait. UUMMM, thats got me thinking. You have given me a few
ideas thanks.
Will post how I got on this weekend on the Avon thread. Fingers crossed on the new line. I can always call in Davies and try to purchase some of the ideas you lads have given me on here. |

Agree with you Cahal but what does change the line and makes one significantly different to another of the same type is the dying process. So to this end
the same line dyed differently will have a different 'feel' to it.

I always used to use Silkworm, but now fishing different rivers, with differing casting distances involved, found it tangled too much.
I use Sufix Stealthlink, unstripped, and don't catch any less - as far as I can tell anyway paul4 |

Hi guys
some might find this site useful for braid (and just about everything else) if you are on a budget. Good customer service too. http://www.tacklebargains.co.uk/acatalog/MainLine_Braids.html Dan |

I'm a fan of the Suffix braids. I generally use Stealth Skin, Heavy Skin and Kameleon. Heavy Skin is the current favourite. They're much easier to
strip back than the Kryston ones.
The BFW Shop has a range of both Kryston and Suffix braids.... Cheers, Andy F

Just to be contrary Andy, thats the reason I prefer Mantis gold! Never breaks at the swivel knot whereas I found it impossible not to break the Stealth (in
15lb BS especially!) I also only strip the smallest possible amount to create a hinge so it is Horses for Courses as usual! I prefer the Suffix brands in
25lb BS, and hence opt for Kryston, however I wonder how accurate these BS figures are!
