Hi Guys,
For the first time ever in 30yrs of off & on fishing, I used to fish matches in the late 70s and through the 80s,, since then, several come-backs to pleasure only and good weather fishing (had my share of the c@@p cold, winter leagues).
Anyway, my latest come back this summer is because my 3 sons 20, 12, 9 yrs all pester to go fishing, the youngest want to learn
, so I had to dust the tackle off again, (3 yr break this time).
So now when I have time and get the chance to fish without the youngest 2, myself & the oldest are after the fish I've never been lucky enough to catch ( whats it's name now ? err begins with a b, not bream or bass lol).
Always kept my Bradford No1 book, so I thought "Cowthorpe" for my first try for only one type of fish ( always been happy to catch whatevers there before), now the targets Barbel.
Cowthorpe late afternoon last thurs, pellet close to far bank small willow, not a damn bite till the sun set, soon after a 5lb chub in the net, popped him back and ten mins later another chub like bite, a few quick little pulls/taps, then I got into something that proceeded to dash into willow and conect my hook to a big dead branch
then it got too dark soon after, so that was the end of my first barbel session.
Tackle, heavy feeder rod and 3/4oz bomb on link, 12lb main, 10lb braid hooklength with hair, size 8 hook, 14mm halibut pellet. (this set-up got me bites), the carp rod & baitrunner with 12lb line, 2oz bomb (running) same braid hooklength/hair, with just a bobin to detect bites, got one quick bite where bobbin hit rod and back down in a flash, got nothing other than that, in same place close to far bank willow, hemp and 3mm & 8mm pellets as feed..
Where did I go wrong or was I just unlucky ? I checked match results for ideas as to what area/peg, went down the dog kennels area actually.
One question I'm asking myself, is, should I have fished mid river rather than close to cover on far bank by small willow !!!
I might try Cowthorpe again or maybe Thornton Bridge, but not even had a look at the later, I always like to check out places normally.
Any advice would be appreciated
I know I could have tried meat as another option.
cheers
Rob
