I know a lot of posters like to fish in flood conditions, personally I find it very daunting and hard work. So I am asking for some of the more experienced flood anglers on here for information on techniques and tackle etc, also do water temperatures mater when the water is in flood? Any diagrams/pictures to accompany the replies would be great.

Its such a big topic this one, but the single most important ingredient IMO is confidence. I have caught them in some horrific conditions. Once you have caught a few your confidence will grow and things will "snowball". You will then try new areas catch a few more (and blank in others). I don't feel that bait or rigs are that important. As long as you have a bait that the fish will pick up, and a rig strong enough to land them you will be fine. My favourite bait is still meat, and I'm still catching on the paste mentioned in the article. I only use it because the fish like it, and its adaptable (big ball/little ball/odd shape ball, and it had a good leak off of flavour), and I can bury the hook, so stopping it getting snagged up. Location is obviously key. You need to know the stretch very well. I cant over state this enough. Not every stretch I have looked at is a good flood stretch. Some times you will have a mile or more of water that would be almost imposable to fish. If your not catching - move. I will only give some swims 5 mins, others might get 10-15. Its better to fish 10 swims for 5-10 mins that 2 swims for 3/4 hour. I also like to retrace my steps and re-fish swims that I have already tried, sometimes the fish will appear from knowhere. Maybe they move onto the area because I have struck off the bait from before??? I'm out tonight, on the Middle Severn at Bridgnorth, if anyone wants to tag along they are more than welcome. Posts: 1301 (23/10/06 13:08) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Without wanting to contradict ScubaSteve, how long you remain in a swim before moving on depends on the river and its barbel population. When I fished the Severn (regularly) I would give each swim 20 to 30 minutes, but on the Ouse at least twice that. Partly because it has not got the Barbel numbers of the Severn, and often because on some productive stretches, access can be very limited, so in 100 yards of bank only one swim provides safe and effective fishing. Sometimes the Barbel are there (or nearby) and take an hour or two to respond. You really do need to know the stretches to determine what you are fishing in when there is 10 feet of water on top of the summer levels. Andy Orme (in Barbel Mania) suggested photographing swims and mapping maps of likely swims in the summer. Vast banks of nettles and samll bushes make for a formidable weed bed in those conditions. On the other hand, one wealthy farmer mows his lawn from his large house right down to the (lnormal level) river bank. As I have fishing rights on that stretch, I know of at least one very nice swim witha smooth bed to the river (mowed lawn!) given an extra 10 or so feet of water. And his ornamental willows will provide very good upstream breaks to the flow! -- Dr Barbus - That which is everybodys business is nobodys business.

I always like seeing that picture Steve but with my serious head on and for the benefit of some of the younger folk who look in on here I think it would be prudent to add that it is only safe to do that sort of thing if you are really sure where you are walking. The river does not take prisoners when it is in flood like that.

Posts: 2309 (23/10/06 18:25) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Doug, The key thing about floods is knowing what stage it is at and adapting tactics accordingly. Obviously nothing in angling is written in stone, but as a general rule you should fish close in with as little lead as possible when it is on the rise and peaking and move further out into the current as it starts to fall and the debris levels go down. Also it is important to remember that there are proper floods that carry a lot of leaves, branches, fridges etc into the river and that scour the bottom re-making the channel and then then there are just rises. What we are seeing on the Severn at the moment is a small dirty rise. We haven't yet got the volume or velocity of water to churn up the river bed, but we've got a biggish rise combined with the first stage of the leaf fall and a lot of dead weed. Tom
