Posts: 332 (29/03/06 19:25) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None I have just been through the FAQ bait archives and can't find what I am looking for so here goes. Being a chef I have access to a lot of raw ingredients that I think would make effective barbel baits if the flavour was used in boilies or paste of some description. The trouble is I have absolutely no knowledge of making my own bait. With the close season now upon us I have plenty of spare time on my days off to experiment. Can anybody give me some advice on how to go about it please? What sort of quantities would I need to start with ie; base mix etc? How long would I cook them for? Once the base mix is done, how much flavour do I need to add? Any help or suggestions will be gratefully recieved. Regards Lewis

Posts: 211 (29/03/06 19:46) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Lewis The basics for a boilie are semolina, soya flour, fishmeal, ground seeds, milk powders etc. etc. Search Google for carp bait recipes and you will find hundreds to get you going. Once you've had a dabble you will soon find the whole process easy but buying the ingredients can be expensive to start. A couple of tips Don't put too much flavour in your bait. And barbel baits only need to be scalded (boiled for 30 seconds) to deter nuisance fish unless you have crayfish in your river in which case you may need them rock hard.

Posts: 1678 (29/03/06 22:20) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Hi I have done a fair bit of research into baits for this coming season, and to be honest i would say just go with a top quality readymade, or if you have to use some other little flavours to give you an "edge" - speak to the company that you get them from. The reason i say go for a readymade is because you will mess about trying to find some wonder bait, and when you do it will probably be the same flavours and additives that are in the readymade, except you will have wasted alot more money and used up alot of tme to find it. Posts: 4411 (30/03/06 16:56) Administrator Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Egg albumen and Whey powder are very good to use as binders - like sodium and calcium caseinate good pastes can be made using these ingredients. However, you may need to also add something that binds and also has a fibrous nature - this sort of ingredient may help reduce the level of albumen, whey etc required. A good example is CLO (mixture of seeds) or equivalent. There are other ingredients that will cause the bait to skin more readily with minimum steaming or boiling. Increasing the water solubles may lead to a better winter bait, increasing the lighter (less dense) ingredients will lead to a buoyant bait and on and on........... Best to keep things fairly simple if you want to avoid a massive ingredient bill. If the bait has an inherent smell/aroma then I would avoid flavours. Don't really think that there is any magic bait - just some are better than others. There again you could buy a couple of kilos of bfw b8 and avoid any trouble Cheers Bob

I never realised it was so expensive to make your own . Think I will go with Barbeljoe and try flavouring some readymades and also seen as I have not tried them yet invest in some BFW Wakas and Elips for the coming season. Posts: 241 (31/03/06 00:23) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	if you are working as a chef you should be able to get some of the things needed quite cheaply you would be surprised how many of the basic ingredients we use that can be used as bait. try using gram flour as a base just with eggs and flavourings i find roasting crab bones and making them into a stock and then reducing to a glace a very good mix i have used this as a paste quite a lot and had quite amazing results for carp with it in the last week. their is lots of other things you can use that are very easily available if you get stuck for ideas pm me and will let you know a few of the other things that have worked for me atb hendersons

However I think it is easier to flavour good quality ready mades. Atleast then you know it is proven and that you can easily find something in the tackle shop to feed with them. There is a big confidence problem when you make a load of baits and have nothing but what you have made to feed. Having said that don't be put off it might make the difference. I do think a lot is down to confidence. Matthew.

Posts: 400 (31/03/06 21:10) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	If you are concerned about cost, try this, I was fishing the Ribble last year, using Halibut pellets, I had some cheese paste with me..just bread and smelly cheddar cheese mixed together.. the Barbs were not showing, I had some crushed pellet which I use in feeder mix,I started to mix the crushed pellet with the Cheese Paste, which I found made a paste with quite a "unique " smell,It did not take long for the ladies to take an interest..In fact I had 4 Barbs to the paste in 4 casts. I have made my own boilies in the past, but I have found since that trip that bread paste makes a very good "on the bank" substitute.
