I wonder whether they will offer anything different to what is already available on the market ?
The standard one states it is, Quote: "strategically ringed for centrepins and fixed spool reels" Now what on earth does that actually mean? Matt.

I see that J.W. Young/Masterline are bringing out a new range of rods. Including a 12' twin top barbel (there's a new idea

Presumable so you don't mistake it for a roach pole or a landing net handle?
To be old and wise, first you have to be young and stupid!

if the rings are strategically placed for centre pin use, there would be two large butt rings about 10 inches apart,to allow pulling the line off with 3 fingers for casting

"strategically ringed ....." ?
Is that another way of saying it's a compromise? paul4 |

Sorry Mike, Hav'nt got that specific rod here and i hav'nt seen it, so i can't comment. The 2 i have are for field testing and once i have completed putting them through the motions, they will be added to the new range. At present, they are performing well...Ray

I'm only quoting from this months Tackle & Guns magazine. But the "strategically ringed ..." did make me chuckle. They have actually used it to describe all 7 rods in the new range (tench, float, s/u float, avon as well). I see it as a prime example of marketing speak - that is meaningless
You can ring a rod in the normal fashion for fixed spool, or possibly slightly differently specifically for 'pin work (like the 2 butt rings close together). But anything else is a compromise of the two surely ? I'm not knocking the rods by the way, I'm sure they will be excellent; just wonder what extra they will offer that isn't already available. The travel rod is a 12ft 5 piece (again 2 different tops) so guess that means aprox 36"+ sections. Matt. |

Hi
To be fair, i have 2 masterline rods (avon quiver and single handed baitcaster rod) and i have to say that i was quite impressed with them. I too cant really see the logic in a twin tip rod but i have yet to hear of a bad word about the masterlines... Respect.... |

Hi Ray, any chance of a bit more about the travel rod, if its difficult i understand mate, just that with all the backwards & forwards to spain at the moment it sounds a good stop gap for me mate as i am reluctant to leave several good rods out there between visits....j.w

Hi John..Copied from the catalogue...JW Young Travel/Barbel
A Highly innovative 5 piece barbel rod designed for the travelling angler whether at home or overseas. With the sections just 30" long, the Travel Barbel will easily fit into a suitcase or lay out of sight in the boot or the smallest car. Supplied with two top sections, a 1.75lb tip and a 3 oz sliced in quivertip. The Tavel Barbel is built on a lightweight blank that can be held for long sessions without fatigue and is stategically ringed for use with both centrepins and fixed spool reels. Order No YTB1200 Length 12FT Pieces 5+ extra tip Lines 2 (3oz) 7-14 1/8508 RRP £149.95 The name of JW Young has long been synonymous with centre pin reels of the highest quality. Now Masterline, owners of the JWYoung company, have developed a small series of rods to complement the centrepin range. Each model is finished to the highest standard ensuring it is worthy of bearing the exclusive JW Young Marque. ----------------------------------------------------------- The rods are a transparent varnished burgundy/maroon/red colour and sort of gets brighter when in the sunlight. The cork handle has a screw down reel seat fitting with a rose wood collar piece and Rosewood section of about 3inches where the reel sits. Not sure if it is Rosewood but it is a hard wood of the same colour and pattern. The whippings are burgundy which blend in well with rod colour, and finely silver tipped. The eyes/ guides are double legged. I think all the JW Young rods in the range are the same colouring. Hope this helps..Ray . |
