Posts: 163 (10/08/08 11:48) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None Prompted by the mention of roach on another thread it brought my thoughts to my favorite winter pastime, fishing for big roach. I know some roach anglers think the only way to catch roach is with a float rod. However I will admit to not being that good with a stick float and centepin and because of this I have concentrated on feeder fishing. I have heard rumblings and comments that perhaps feeder fishing for roach is not the done thing so therefore a feeder caught roach is not quite so worthy. So what do you think trotting or feeder?

Yes its nice to get them on the float in its many forms but sometimes its just not practical. Use whatever the conditions dictate and if the "purists"? frown upon it then so be it, what do they really matter anyway?

I prefer to fish for roach in a river but have no beef with those that fish gravel pits for them. For me being on the upper reaches of a coloured hampshire avon on an overcast dull february morning with nobody else about has a certain magic to it.

I have recently bought a 5 metre whip (ooh er MR) that comes complete with an elasticated top section for under 20 quid. I fish pole or stick floats with fine lines and tiny hooks with maggot, hemp or bread punch as bait. I love the learning curve that "trying" to perfect this technique offers. Last winter while catching bait I stumbled across some big Roach and had about a dozen for 6 or 7 pound, right little scrappers to on light gear, went back the next day and filled me boots with some more two nearly a pound. If you know of a water that may contain truly big Roach then I would tip fish close to dark but if any Roach will do it has to be the float for me for fun and hitting those delicate/fast bites. If you're after selecting big Roach try not to use maggot. Anne xxx

They are probably the most unpredictable fish in our rivers. I use MAP light feeder rods with 3lb main line and 2lb hook lengths. I have doctored my feeders to fish in line with a short hook length and almost always use red maggot as bait. I have had some good results on a couple of hard waters fishing this way. I am going to experiment with a 14mtr pole this winter to try and get the bait into those more inaccessible areas under bushes etc. Roll on November I say!

For me though that donk on the rod tip as a hard earned 2lb river beauty nails the maggot is priceless.

Okay, if you have big Roach on a river near you, there is nothing better, but if the only Big Roach you are likely to catch is from a disused gravel pit, so be it ? Bob

At present I have a passion for roach and trying to outwit the bigger ones is an art in itself. They can change their habits from one season to the next and can truly test your wits. Big roach like big dace are a rare commodity in our rivers and both should have our respect.

I also dont think a pit fish is any less of an achievement, though personally I'd rather catch one from my local river, mostly from a nostalgia point of view. With regards dace being more interesting, that is your preference and more power to you. "WHY do so many anglers think roach are so special " you could say that about any species, barbel, tench, carp... each species has its merits. If a species' rarity is how you judge its appeal, perhaps burbot would be of interest On a more serious note, can anyone suggest a nice hook pattern, must be eyed, mediumish gape, for flake and larger particles - sweetcorn and the like? the local tackle shop has got all the hooks behind the counter so I can't have a good nose. I have seen some very big Roach on a couple of (river) venues and would love to connect with one ! I have had a big Dace from the Kennet, but was alone......I couldn't say how heavy, but sizing it next to a Chublet it was 12ozs plus......... I tend to fish VERY fine for them 1 1/4lbs bottom and 2 1/2lbs mainline, the main problem being on the Upper Hants Avon and Kennet, the presence of some sizeable Trout and Chub......... Baitwise, for BIG Roach then bread is king in winter (although maggot will still produce). In summer/autumn, Hemp is king ! On my local river it is hard work as you need to wade through loads of smaller fish, but catching them is a pleasure ! I've not fished the feeder much for Roach, but half the challenge is catching them on the float........Like everything, location and possibly doing something different is the key ! Pellet on Barbel venues anyone !? Paul M.....

Im no purist, but it just aint cricket. plus the barbel became a bit of a pest!!!! Actually did better with bread, without the barbel becoming a pain.
