Posts: 630 (10/05/08 08:24) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None Having been into Specimen fishing all my life, I will hold my hands up I say I'm a far better trapper than catcher. Be it watching a Tip and Touch legering, or casting out a dead bait, even sitting behind buzzers antisibating the run from an unseen Carp. Thats why I have lots of time for the Match lads or the dicicated Stick Float anglers, who have imence skill when catch their fish. Where do you you fit and does it matter if your a Trapper or catcher ? Bob

Having friends that excel at all types of float fishing, to the stage where you would say it's an art form, there is nothing better to watch than someone who can flick a float out to the other side of a river, using the wallis cast. Or can shot a float perfectly, so that it does not drift about and like me resort the the lift method or wind beaters. Still because I enjoy the float, I will persevere until I get the hang of it, I've only been trying for 54 years !! Bob

Real angling skill is more than laying a trap and awaiting a bite, I have a far bigger P B list than a good mate of mine. But his skills out weight my captures ten fold, he has caught thousands of Barbel in his 55years of angling, all of them whilst trotting. At a recent fish-in, very good trappers stood in wonder as he flicked a two BB stick float, using a Hardy Conquest centre pin, further than most of us could flick the same rig using a fixed spool. Just sheer angling skill, made it look so easy !! There must be some more posters who look on in amazment at great angler, making fishing skills look so easy ? Bob

Being able to strike at the right fish. I also doalot of feeder fishing and can often hit bite and conect with fish where other people would not even know it was a bite. Butwould this be classed as a skill. I also think that a high level of wate craft is a skill rob

Posts: 779 (04/09/76 20:10) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	hi,rob i see you live in my part of the world,so must fish the avon where you can spot them.in the fishing i do i never use any kind of feeder,as i find most of the big fish nearbank most of the time,in overgrown areas.if the fish are further out then i use a catapult for a few samples.in the summer i mainly use particle baits or ellips pellits[the flat ones] which seems to do the trick. derek.

This season im using 6mm pellets for my river fishing. I also mainly fish the margins i think they are the biggest feature and also the most over looked. ive watched big fish spok off anything bigger at times rob

Posts: 781 (11/05/08 20:22) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	hi,i dont actually sight fish for them rob[ime not in terry lampards class]i find the fish first, dont matter how long it takes as i am there all day,i only need to spot one barbel or big chub then i know there will be others not far away. on one stretch i fish the other bank is nothing else but overhanging trees and foliage,but best of all its no fishing,so they dont get disturbed. derek.

I wonder who wrote these pearls of wisdom, could it of been Der Der Der.................. sight fishing is the only way and you must be holding the rod. hi,dont agree, the best bite indicater is watching them take the bait or this one...... well,how many are missed when the barbel are picking up your bait,then dropping it without moving away.no indication ime afraid on your quiver or rod tip unless your.............................................. Bob I don't usually say this but, "Nice post Bob", I sat behind Dave Harrel a few years ago while he fished a match in Shrewsbury on the Quarry section. He was like a machine, cast, feed, strike, feed, unhook the fish, feed, re-bait, cast, etc etc, and all the time he kept up a running commentary and a conversation with me.The thing I remember most was his hand was never out of the bait box, six maggots a time went sailing down the river and at times the float did not have time to settle before it buried. Posts: 593 (12/05/08 10:10) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Over 35 years having come through the ranks of match/pleasure angler to my now 'choose a species' style of fishing I would class myself as a catcher who sometimes set's traps It is very easy have knowledge of where fish get caught; to fish there long enough and you will catch..... I prefer to move about, trying little or unfished swims that have very descreate features. If you can spot the fish it's great but more often than not you need to use that sixth-sense It's surprising how often a little niggle can put you on to something........and whether some people are just 'tuned in' so much better than others? I think it was Harry Vardon ( lots have copied it after ) who once said the more I practice the luckier I get ? I have a few very good match fishing mates and have watched them many times, but try as I do I just have not got those skills. I also have a mate, who makes them look almost amateurish, ex international, his Mum told me the other week that he would practice casting into a bucket on the playing field behind his house when he was young. He would set himself a target of 20 last casts, if one missed the bucket he would start again, often she would have to come and get him in as it was dark !! At the local Match pool they let him fish as a guest, but don't allow him into the competitions, as he would normally win !! Great fishing skills dont come easily, but I trhink you have to have some good manual skills to start with !! Bob

There are many occasions when i have come across a catcher on the bank when trapping would be much the better method for the conditions on that day. i firmly believe there is as much skill in trapping as there is in catching, after all you have to present your trap in such a way and in such a position to fool your quarry into taking your strategically placed titbit it doesn't always have to be passing over its head. What is the old saying 'horses for courses.'

Just watch some of the top feeder men on the Trent or the Severn that is also a fine art, just as tripping a light bomb or free lined bait through a swim is. By comparison creeping into position and setting a trap and then waiting for a bite does seem a bit simplistic although there are places where due to the conditions, (low clear river and bright sunlight), and the spookiness of the fish that that is exactly the approach I use. To illustrate the effectiveness of the method this is a near double I managed to trap from a swim within a foot of the bank on the Wye a couple of seasons ago.

It certainly does not require the same amount of skill of a good Float or Pole fisherman who also have to have watercraft. Bob ps- nice fish Titus

Surely this is the greatest skill? A legered bait (with perhaps Mr Walton's skills aside) can rarely, if ever, match this in presentational terms? On rivers, most legering is presented in 2 dimensions, with float it's 3. Similarly to you, Titus, I took this double from 2 feet off the bank (under my feet), in my first week of targetted barbel fishing. 10 minutes after I arrived. The only real skill I applied was the confidence to do it. The water was clear, 2 feet deep and it was roughly 3pm. Not an easy venue, either.

I only remember it because I had set myself a challenge of catching a double from each of my three favorite rivers in one week. That was the best I managed from the Wye, in fact it was the biggest fish of the week, I also had a 9.3 from the Teme and a 9.9 from the Severn.
