hi all,no its got nothing to do with hooklengths, but how long do you keep your bait in the water after just casting in.10 minutes,20,1hour or even longer.

hi,yes agree with that kevin.its not always possable to find fish on some rivers, being to murky or coloured, but if you are sure that the area you are fishing
has turned up fish before,or you know it contains a certain feature or hole, then i think its better to leave the bait where it is for a conciderable length of
time.ime not a believer in keep casting in all the time where i fish, all that does is spook them.this thread is simular to spotting,as i have seen many anglers
have a quick look in a swim, see nothing after 5 or ten minutes then move on,if only they had waited longer to look, you only need to see one decent fish,as
there may be others under the weed or under the far bank,or may have already fed on there natural food before you came along and are resting up somewhere.now
this may sound a bit silly, but if you knocked on your nieghbors door and didnt get an answer, that would be because they are either out shopping,at work,or gone
to a friends house,or asleep in the chair, sure you get my drift.

Hi Derek- if river is allowing my cast just before dark is my last one till either I get a take or I pack in. Unless something unusual happens I never cast
after dark once I,m happy with everything. The hour before sunrise where I generally fish is a top time and it never fails to give me palpitations after
sitting without a touch for 5-7hrs when one just wacks you out of the blue. Agree with you entirely, no point in repeated casting to same area.ATB Harry.

Each to his/her own on this one, but personally, using two rods, one will be positioned downstream as a sleeper, the other recast to either the same or
different spots in the swim every 15/20 minutes, but well upstream of the other bait, very often a move will be made after 1-2hours if no action.I will rarely
leave a bait in position for more than 2hours with no indications, especially in summer conditions.

Derek, I am amazed that an expert such as yourself really needs to pick our brains anymore, why ask questions and then proceed to tell us we are wrong. How
long does it take for a Crayfish to eat a bait? thats right you don't know because you don't have any on the h.a, but plenty of people do including
myself, so its a valid point to me albeit not to you

As you'll see from Ousemeister's agreeing reply (he got it... ),
I can also make a valid point in short, "easy" words when the mood takes.

Derek,
If it helps, your question is "how long is a piece of string". No 2 baits, no 2 rivers, no 2 sets of conditions are going to be alike. Not to mention problems associated with some waters, but not others (e.g. crays, mitten crabs, etc). What was the reason for your asking the question? |
|||
derek2fisherman |

hi,skin i never asked -how long is a piece of string,i think that was kevin.yes i have never seen crayfish in the avon, but there is plenty of other species
that can nick the bait.

Derek,
I think Simon's point is that you might as well have asked " how long is a piece of string" because both lead to the same answer - it all depends. Even in the same peg and all other conditions being equal, which is unlikely, the time that you leave the bait in the water might vary depending even on what time of the day it is and personally speaking what frame of mind I am in too. So your question is difficult to answer at best and on the basis that "it all depends" there's not really much you are likely to get by way of a response that you could apply in practice. If we can get to the botttom of why you asked your question then we might stand a chance. ATB Mike |

Happy Birthday Titus,
It depends on the river- on the Lea Navigation system, you are lucky if you can keep a bait in the water for more than a couple hours, due to Crayfish and Mitten Crabs. Other rivers I would be more than happy to leave in for 12hrs of more if I had a hard bait on the rig, it has to be a How long is a peice of string !! Bob |
