My last attempt resulted in roach and skimmers (no eels thankfully!) but not barbel. Im unsure on amount of bait to take/use and also tackle - do you use your usual rods (1.5 test curve avon style rods in my case) and 10lb line etc. or use a quivertip and that. I'd suggest you buy Stef & Phil's 'magic moments' - Stef is without doubt the master of the method and explains it well in the book.

Posts: 363 (13/08/07 11:35) More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Darren, I would go with hemp/caster. 4pt of hemp 2pints of caster(keep a few back for the hook)8lb mainline 6lb bottom(2/3ft long) size 12/14 hook blockend feeder around 50g,depening on where your fishing. Cast every 5min to start with until you start to get some bites,small fish might been on to the feed first but im sure barbel/chub will move in if your in the right area. I tend to use 2 rods but only fish with 1 the other will just have a feeder and i just keeping casting it every 20min through out the day to keep the bait going in. Cheers Ian

But if I have lots of small fish in the swim, it can be near impossible to get through them. If its a river with a large silver fish population, leave the maggots until winter. You could try feeding them off and accept that you will catch silvers, Chub and Barbel, but you may need a gallon of Maggots. Fake maggots/casters are good, but I have found they work best in conjunction with live maggots ? Bob

The feeder is an ideal tool for feeding a swim, as after putting down an initial carpet, say 10-12 chucks without a hook on, the rate of feed can largely be self regulating, ie. the more bites you get, the more casts you have, and therefore the more feed you put in. I would also agree with bait quantities of 2pt caster, 4pt hemp for a days sport, if there are loads of silvers about then consider something else on the hook. You can also add a handful of 3mm halibut feeder pellets per pint of hemp, this works well on the Trent. You could also consider using slightly smaller hooks if the peg will warrant it, particularly if the peg is largely snag free and the fish are shy, you could also try some of the new fine diameter "hi-tech" hook lengths, but to do this you should bear in mind the weight of the feeder as breaks on the take can occour if your feeder is too heavy in relation to your hooklength, as the late Ivan Marks used to say "Balanced Tackle" is the secret. You can also add a power gum link into the equation as a shock absorber, which can help, but complicates the end rig. The use of longer rods like the Daiwa 11/13 at its long length (and now at 15' too) can assist in absorbing the shock of the bite and fish control on lighter lines. Hope this is of use, it certainly applies to the Trent and Severn, therefore i guess most of the larger rivers too.

Posts: 190 (13/08/07 16:59) More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	try a size 10 korum s3 hook, with a korda maggot klip,tied on a hair you should be able to get about 10+ maggots on there leaving a good sized hook bait for barbel, you could also use casters on the korda maggot clip but i would put a couple of fake casters on aswell as the real ones.

We used to use drennan feeder rods or jw avon quivers with six pound mainline and 4 pound bottom to a size 18 drennan ss hook. If they were really having it we would fish straight through to a size 14 or even a 12 but if it was hard going we would drop down as low as a 22 with a 1.7 bottom. I would go through six pints of maggot and the same of hemp on a long, (dawn till dusk), summer day and regularly weighed in 80lb of schoolies at the end of the day. Times have changed a bit since the pellet revolution but I still speak with loads of summer anglers every year on the middle Severn who still use that tackle and tactics.

Posts: 8025 (14/08/07 13:33) More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	we fished several p[laces but not as far as the severn, one thing we did find and that was once the barbel homed in on em they could never get enough, never ever seemed to fill em up or out? anyone else ever notice this in the past? 2 of us would get through between 1 & 2 gallons fishing side by side....j.w 22/6d a gallon then
