I know very little about fishing terminology but am OK in a hands on situation, so whats the best way to learn? Talking to others, books, just doing it? I am going to fish the method on the Kennet as I am comftorable doing this from my time Carp fishing a few years back, but I'd love to have the knowledge to be able to pick swims, try many different methods to suit different situations etc.. A bit like the matrix where they just load information into your head...

Most will be helpful as long as you are not making a nuisance of yourself......the knowledge gained through observation can be worth 20 or more blind fishing trips Darren.

Posts: 252 (07/08/07 11:28) More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	hi matey, anglers instinct plays a good part of it. get to now your species what it likes ,where it feeds, where it likes to get cover ect. its a learning curve but once you find them and present a bait to them its not rocket science. youll soon get a feel for the river. bfw is the best source of knowledge on barbel fishing. loads of knowledgeable chaps who have been doing it for centuries can help you out when you get stuck, be prepared, you have to do a bit of work and the odd blank aswell. but perseverance will always pay off. also most importantly, be aware at this time off year barbel need recovering after being caught. read up on fish care and safe rigs before attempting catching them. eric

I'm sure they could show you alot of things in a day that would take a few years of trial and error by yourself. Why not mail Graham Elliott as i'm sure he guides on the river you mention

There are many good books out there that will increase your knowledge. Barbel Rivers and Captures- www.crowood.com This will give you a pretty good insight into Modern Barbel Fishing. Use your instincts to find Barbel, gravel patches, rafts of debris, clear channels in the weed, the crease line on two different flows, its juast water craft. As a carper, you may well have leaded around a swim, do the same with Barbel Rivers. If you find you enjoy Barbel fishing you can go onto, touch legering, upstream feeder fishing, rolling meat, maggot madness etc etc Who knows, you might enjoy using a Centre Pin, but don't let this lot fool you into thinking you have to learn the Wallis Cast to get the best out of a Pin ? Take your time and enjoy developing your experience, at your age youve got plenty of time and you will pick up plenty of tips on this site. If you're going to be fishing the Kennet, learn how to trundle meat as it is by far one of the most reliable methods of putting lots of kennet barbel on the bank. A good friend of mine is a master on the kennet and has taken upwards of 300 barbel in a season on this method including some big fish. Like others have said, read as much barbel literature as you can, but dont forget to keep yourself in check and remember that its important to be happy with your fishing, so dont set yourself difficult targets until you have some experience.
