I've decided to go with some spools loaded with the usual mono but want to give braid a good go this year as well. I'm happy with the mono that I'm going with, but need some advice on the braid as there's so much to choose from on the market (Berkely, Daiwa, Fox etc etc). I did use to use Fireline about 5 years ago and was fairly happy with that but as things have developed since then, I recognise that others are likely to know better than me now.... I'll be fishing the W Avon as well as the Teme so would have thought that 15lb was plenty as the mainline. Can any of you give me recommendations/experiences with the different braids please? It's great stuff and made a great difference to my fishing. I only use centrepins but have it on my f/s reels too, although they rarely if ever, see the light of day (or night) I couple this with 15lb Sufix Stealthlink for my barbel fishing hooklengths. paul4

In most situations that is not a problem and that is what i tend to use. if I want braid that sinks I use Dynon CK. It is slightly thicker per breaking strain but I have had no problems with it on either pin or fixed spool. Vir prudens non contra ventum mingit

If i want braid to sink i use a 3oz lead:) Paul4, Have you tried the Spiderwire Ultracast Invisi-braid? I've just got some after hearing good reports,my first impression was how invisible it didn't look:(

So is PowerPro suitable for feeder/lead work or is it really geared at the float? ATB

Sure, its very thin and that make it great in flood conditions as its slim profile allows you to use lighter leads even when fishing aross the flow. It's also strong but its abrasion resistance was naff. A couple of unexpected crack-offs sending large feeders into orbit and, worse of all, a lost fish when it parted under very little pressure convinced me it was not up to the job. Lots of folk seem to love it, but its not for me.

The breaking strain in kg UK/European market. 2. The breaking strain in pounds US market. The European units usually reflect the linear or unknotted breaking strain and the strain given in pounds is a good indication of the knotted breaking strain. There is a large difference between them. In my experience Power Pro marked at 30lb bs (US) and 0.28mm diameter with a suitable knot usually snaps at this figure. However, if you go by the UK/European breaking strain figure of 20kg/44lb then you would be probably sadly disappointed. In fact they are the same line. Confusing but there you go, Cheers Bob

Just as I was finishing up the second one, one of my cats ran into the room, grabbed the loose line, and promptly chewed through it in about 5 seconds!!!!! Do you reckon I've got some line out of a duff batch or just got a cat with bloody sharp teeth lol????? It's 20lb breaking strain.... Never give up - There's always tomorrow!

Used powerpro on the wye and was very dissapointed with it,snapped like cotton a few times on,rocky bottoms (so not very abrasion proof)IMO so changed spool back to mono,and was fine. Have since tried it on the thames,and was fine on the sandy bottom of that river,so guess horses for courses. Howard

Bit late now for you but I use Fireline,.....8lb for float fishing for Barbs.......it floats as stated so is ideal for this... Had a brillant result on this. The line pinged through a submerged branch OK, did not let me down. The rod cushioned any lunges, that and the fact it was on a centre pin so can instantly give line.(you need something like that due to the no stretch factor).
