================ Anyone know the condition of the Dane after all this heavy rain over the last 48 hrs. With a bit of luck it will be spot on. Good luck to all Dane Anglers this year and lets pray for no more pollution. ================ |

The rain stopped around mid morning today and it will be fine this afternoon but more rain is forecast tonight and tomorrow followed by showers on Sunday.
Personally the more water in the Dane, the worse I think it fishes. I know others disagree but then I fish probably the fastest stretch with barbel in so an extra 12" makes it quite difficult. I had 3 blanks last year and one was on the 16th. It can be slow going to start with. |

there was possibly 2' on at dinnertime , but I couldn't stop to have a better look , the Weaver at Nantwich was probably the same . No matter what I will be going to Croxton tomorrow

Re: River Dane | ||

there was at least 3' at croxton weir and very coloured . most swims were unfishable due to the debris comming down (weed , branches , one apple mac , kids football , several 5 gallon buckets and a boom to stop oil floating down ).I had one bite but that was it

Carl you have only one realistic option on a PAAS card on the Dane which is Manor Farm at Byley near Middlewich. The barbel thin out considerably above the A50 road bridge at Holmes Chapel/ Cranage and while you are in with a chance up at Swettenham it is not as big a chance as you have further down river.
Look for a swim with some deeper water and some cover and you maximise your chances. You can catch fish when you can see them but you can also catch more fish when you can't see them ! I hope that helps. Btw it's a good walk from the farm to the river and uphill on the way back so take as little as possible and only what you need. Aside from the Dane there are good PAAS barbel stretches on the Ribble, Dove, Trent and Severn (and just possibly the Derwent) but they are further away for you, though the average size of the fish may be better. There are some good fish in the Dane if you persevere but there is also a very large stock of small fish around 1 to 2 lbs capable of taking 20mm + pellets which can be frustrating to say the least. |

What about Hermitage Farm at Holmes Farm, and the Radnor Bridge Stretches (both upstream and downstream). -- Dr Barbus

Hi, I have a bay malton book and so far have only ventured to the Holmes Chapel stretch with fair results, not being a local I am just wondering what the other Bay Malton stretches are like for barbel?

Re: PAAS on the River Dane

For the benefit of readers of my previous post, Hermitage and Radnor mentioned by Darryl are both upstream of the A50 bridge. IMO there has always been a resident barbel population up there but it has not expanded with the speed the fish have multiplied from say the A50 down to Croxton.
Dane anglers keep catches pretty close to their chest and although you get the odd nudge and wink I don't think any PAAS anglers go to the Dane with a view to catching a bag of barbel, so to speak, like they would going to the Severn. Btw there has always been an indigenous grayling population at Radnor now probably overtaken by the grayling introduced by PAAS at Swettenham in the 90's. With minor exceptions between venues, chub are still the dominant species in the river throughout but there is a significant barbel population in the lower middle reaches so that in a day it would be most unusual for me to catch more chub than barbel and in years past I might only catch say 10 chub in a season and five or six times as many barbel. Things have changed now and are still changing. I catch more chub, and many, many more barbel but relatively few fish of any consequence. I am still thinking it through so to speak. |

Re: PAAS on the River Dane

keep on getting told that BM has not played fair, indeed another Clitheroe Anglers jacket, non NFA either ?
if true lets hope another club with similaraly low ethics and morals repeats the gesture to them, us as anglers should vote with our £`s and give BM a swerve fished the Dane today for a small Barbel and and a lot of Chub, all the chub in and around the 3lb stamp, river looked absolutely delightful, guess there was a ft or so on and was distinctly more coloured the lower down i viewed\fished, |

Leso,
fished Saturday for a pile of chub - none above 3 Ib, river too looked good. Always convince myself its too early for barbel - despite others catching ! |

hi Chevin, first day out in a fair while for me today, normally do well early season through into the Autumn yet tend to struggle when the winter starts to bite, sure you will be amongst them before too long

Re: River Dane | ||

I'm not going to have a go at Bay Malton here because I'm not full aware of the circumstances under which they acquired the Manor Farm stretch of the Dane which has been held by Lymm AC for many years.
All I will say is that if any club willfully acquires rights to a water in an underhanded way then they should be treated by the rest of the fishing fraternity as scum, for that is what they are. Their members should also be treated like scum as, by remaining members of the club, they are condoning the actions of their club. |
