Any info regards level and amount of debris coming down on the Nottingham to Newark section would be very much appreciated. Suspect its bank top and full of carp.
Good luck to all this season, Craig.

We went first night at Muskham. Was advised to move due to the rising water and boy did it rise!! We went on the pits and most people packed up on the river. Those that stayed had a few out, biggest I heard was 8lb+ on big pellet.

Had a look at East Bridgford (about half a mile down from Gunthorpe bridge) on the 16th. River was about 5ft higher than norm and there were pallets, logs and buses floating down at a rate of knots (ok I was lying about the last one). Chatted to some guys fishing - there were a few up to 9lb coming out on pellet. But they were reeling in every few minutes because of debris on the line. One guy was saying he was having trouble holding the bottom with a 4oz lead!! I decided to wait a few days - tchh no dedication

Had a couple of short sessions so far - first day was awful as other posts have said as there was too much s*it coming down to make it at all enjoyable . Second day was a lot better - less s*it and plenty of fish coming out on pellet, including doubles, but not to me.
I had a bit of a 'mare - hooked 6 fish in a short evening session (all on meat) but lost 3 of them (2 hook pulls and one snapped braid hooklength). Can't remember the last time I had such a loss rate - they didn't feel particularly big fish and on 10lb braid and size 6 hooks you don't expect to lose them! Biggest landed was 8.5 but the current made it very tough. Might try another session mid week. Four ounce lead - lucky you, I needed 5 and 6 ozs and still not quite enough at times! |

River started to drop about five, must have fallen about a foot when I left just before midnight. The water was clearer today, and certainly a lot less rubbish on the line. I wasn't happy when I arrived being forced into my winter backwaters by the flow, but half a dozen chub and four barbel to 9lb 14oz soon sorted that out! Cheers Ron

Good to hear that the river is dropping, hopefully there will be less weed drifting so i will be able to keep a hook in the water for more than 10 minutes without it getting fouled!
Had a big fat blank on the 16th even though the river looked spot on, high, coloured and warm but the weed was a real problem! Going fishing about 2 miles below Gunthorpe weir on Friday all being well. Does anyone know if this is a decent stretch of river or not? I'm trying to fish away from the circus but have never seen anyone fishing this particular area. |

You should be OK Barbel Novice. I haven't yet worked out exactly where 2 miles downstream is yet but the area has plenty of fish and no it isn't heavily fished at all because most of it involves walking more then 100 metres from the car!
The river was back up again last night to saturday's level after the heavy rain overnight but there was relatively little rubbish coming down. You will need at least 5 ozs to hold bottom away from the near bank snags. I had a very short 1 hour session last night near where you are planning to go. Only had one bite and had a 7 lb fish. I was expecting a little more action given the conditions but must'nt grumble I suppose. River deserted - amazing really - June, first week of season, river up and coloured, fish feeding - the lure of the England under 21's perhaps? |

Cheers Mike, your the first person that i've come across that actually fishes the stretch and can give me some info!
I'm a member of the Nott's Anglers Association and the stretch in question is just up from the old star and garter (now a nursing home). Really like the look of it but was put off by the lack of knowledge on the stretch. Should be more pioneering really and go and find out for myself i suppose! Regardless of water levels i'll be out Friday night come hell or high water. I've got to get that blank off my mind. |
