Posts: 479 (12/07/07 12:06) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None In summer a lot of fast water becomes a trickle, yet in other places it stays pretty much the same. One location I fish has a four connecting channels, one with a weir; the weir is just a trickle now but another channel is comparitively hurtling through (not as strong as winter but very fast compared to the weir). I was thinking, will the fish that hang out in the weir in winter move to the faster water in the other channel or are these beasts stuck in their habits?

A few bits of water that I know are devoid of barbel this year (I can see that they are - nothing but for dace, chublets and minnows - they've moved to greener pastures, but just where those g.p.s are though......

In high water temperatures the fish are far more active, they will tolerate turbulent water, because thats where the food is(small fish, invertibrates etc). In cold water, as their motabilism slows down, more evenly paced water is far more to their liking, also all the natural food stuff goes into these areas, a link I think!!! peter

Posts: 2473 (12/07/07 21:52) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	several times in the past few, low-water, years, I have witnessed both barbel and chub (in non-spawning mode, well past the time) move both up and down through fast, inches-deep water - backs and dorsal fins out - to get the hell out of where they were (feed less, fast de-oxygenating, wide-open and shelter-free water). This done at dusk and, memorably, last year, at two o'clock one dull mid-summer afternoon. Some of these fish were moving out of a depleted weir, down to wider, deeper, more sheltered waters, below; others moving up to weirs from move-or-die-here stagnancy.
