Thats not much money to spend, i think ron thompson do a barbel rod, and in all truth ive not picked it up, however they do good beachcasters and spinning rods, he may want to look on ebay see if he can pick up a bargain
Hope that helps |

here is another deal on wychwood rogues ,they're a good standard rod and would be a good choice . I can also recommend the pentera barbel rods from dragoncarp (i have a pair) they have been a great rod ,they come with three tops a three tip quiver , a 1.5lb tc top And a 1,75lb tc top.never let me down (had my only double figure barbel on one) been great ,with only 6oz leads +pva bags making them work hard in heavy floodwater.but in normal conditions have been great ,style wise they're not as slim as more expensive rods but look great with their abrieviated handles apart from that they look the same as any far eastern made rods.
![]() and only £39 from Here would make a ideal occasional rod. steve

Probably not. Us work-shy, dole-scrounging non-catchers have to get bed early so they can go fishing in the morning when the real contributors to our society are hard (doubtful, not in recent memory) at work. After all, someone has to do it. Hi, James. Good to see back on BFW. Loved the vaguely threatening personal messages that you sent me a few weeks back, on your last visit to these boards. Been fishing lately? |

The John Wilson Avon rod can be picked up for about £40 if you look around. Would be fine for most Barbel, and could still be used for other types of fishing. You could do a lot worse.

In my experience, Daiwa produce some pretty good rods in the lower price range. You won't get anything decent for £40 though, unless you find a good second hand one. It depends what kind of river you are planning to fish, but if the barbel go to a decent size, a 2lb tc carp rod might be your best bet. A few people will scream in horror at such advice, but most of the lighter rods in your price bracket can be very under powered. I have had cheap, so-called 1.75lb tc rods that a 3lb chub could tie in knots.

Shimano Alivio Barbel Classic with an Avon and two quivers is around that sort of money. I think Fosters of Birmingham are amongst the cheapest retailers of this rod.

Re: ' back | ||

Go for the Rogue X - outstanding value - if your mate can stretch to an extra tenner the 1.5 x 2 lb tc twin tip should cover most situations, the 1.5 lb tip being a bit pokier than that in my opinion, more like a 1.75.

Shimano Hyperloop, decent enough and if you shop around £50 should be enough.
FYI I got a £110 rod off e-bay for £60 delivered.... have a good nosey on there Dan |

i can vouch for the wychwood rogue barbel rod 2ld test curve on ebay less than 50 quid as i bought one an is a good rod

Re: ' back | ||

Get the hyperloop 1.75 test it's a good rod.
I've had barbel up to 11lb on mine and it copes brilliantly. Tho I am not a tackle tart. You only need a 2lb test curve if you are going to fish heavy leads in flood conditions. Which if this aummer is anything to go by.............. Bill |
