Subject : Re: Canoe rights.
Canoes, Your last chance please read this and sign the petition
You may have seen the articles on unregulated Canoe access to all our
rivers in
other parts of this Forum, and noted that legislation was recently thrown
out by
Parliament that would give totally unlimited access to all rivers to
Canoes,
regardless of the owners wishes. This supersedes all other information on
this
subject on this site
Following the initial victory a petition to Tony Blair has been launched
to
again give access. You saw the power of such a petition in the recent
road
charging debate. FACT, the angling governing bodies were scared of
launching
their own petition initially because they feared Canoeists signatures
would
outnumber anglers, because anglers in general are a disorganised rabble
with no
competent governing body, so FACT decided not to launch a petition on
this
subject for exactly the reason that lower angler numbers than paddlers
would be
damaging to our position on access and paddlers only had just over 5000
signatures anyway.
This petition,
petitions.pm.gov.uk/No2Canoes , was launched
Independently after the legislation was thrown out, and now we have the
situation FACT feared would arise. The enclosed link is the one I hope
you all
want to say NO to this menace, and do it NOW
We need to get as many members as possible to sign up to this so that
angler
numbers are larger than paddlers.
Please action immediately in getting info out to our members and all
other
anglers you know and get them to sign up. This is not a joke
If you want to see what it could be like, take a trip toe Leighton
Buzzard on a
Sunday morning and see what an impact the 60 members of Leighton Buzzard
Canoe
Club has on the Grand Union Canal through the town and elsewhere. They
usually
start launching at 10 am just south of the disused railway bridge (Black
Bridge)
on Town South section and they can be on the water for 2 hours or more.
Their activities are not limited to just Sundays and not just organised
training
groups. You try and fish anywhere in the Town stretch (if you can find a
gap
between the moored narrow boats) during summer weekday evenings. They do
not
adhere to British Waterways "Code of Practice" and virtually do
as they please.
Just imagine what it would be like if they were let loose on the
non-navigable
Ouse & Ivel. They (the BCU) seem to forget that they are demanding
access to
private property which people like ourselves cherish greatly for its
solitude
and peacefulness. It's almost like us demanding access to the canoeists'
back
gardens for a kick about with a football to improve the country's chances
in
winning the next World Cup! Dream on! I sometimes despair of our local
Luton MPs
- they are out of touch.
This petition needs to be signed by every angler we can get, on the web,
in
Tackle shops and anywhere anglers gather, this is the last fling of the
dice, at
the moment there are a minimal number of anglers against and 5000
paddlers for,
so if you don't want football in your back yard against your will do it
now.
This is war, and we need to make sure we win so tell everyone you know,
and get
as many people to object to this plan as possible.
Angling is under threat like never before, it's up to you if you want to
do
something about it or not!
You have been warned - You have until the 11th May
