Does size matter? |

A month and a bit away from the new season something has caught my mind,i spent last year going after some very big barbel due to a relocation i will now be fishing a river that has a few barbel in and the average is about 5,6 pounds.I love the challenge of a new water pioneering a new swim putting plans in place and catching any barbel puts the icing on the cake.So i was wandering what do people consider to holds more value a big barbel from water that has a lot of barbel in or any barbel from a water with not many in?

Yes!! to beat you pb is a great acheivement!!. However you do, i think have to take this into perspective when considering what river you are fishing. As we know there are some truly massive fish in certain rivers which are highly sought after. But by catching the same fish just one or two ounces bigger is that as great a feat as catching say a double from the wandle(my local) or a twelve/thirteen from the mole or lodden???And you should also consider cost and hours put in as these all go to making a fair size fish into something to remember for a long time.

Hi All
I think everyone how goes Barbel fishing would like to beat there PB and catch Big Fish. But you have to be in the area or the right River and feeding. So some times it great fun to catch any size and just enjoy your fishing and are great river. Tight Lines and Happy Barbel Fishing.Nigel (For the new Season) |

Well said Paul...............I fish for bites, try to convert every one into a fish on the bank, enjoy the session and hope for a new PB. I could not do as many do and spend session after session blanking for the quest of that one monster fish. In my experience, the best sport comes from barbel in the 7-10lb bracket, most of the 12, 13, 14's I have caught have chugged along the bottom and not scrapped half as well as the smaller fish.

Hmmmmm,
Interesting question really.........If I could catch a Barbel of any size from a virgin / lightly stocked water I'd be well made up and would have a great sense of achievement. HOWEVER, could I trade that for a 15-17lber from a river such as The Kennet, then there would be no contest I'm afraid A fish of say 13-14lb from The Marden would just as credible(if not more so IMHO) and would give me more satisfaction than that......(pretty unlikely as it is.....) All in all, a difficult one to answer...... Cheers Paul M......... |

For me it's the challenge, if 5 to 6lbs was the average in the water, and 8's were like rocking horse dung, then i'd be after them, but for some it's about catching any old Barbel that takes their bait, and why not. Ask yourself this - am i enjoying my fishing, if you can say yes, it's the only thing that matters at all.

Quote: It certainly is. I beat my PB 4 times last season and equaled it 3 times. Excited? yes, over the moon.--Then that little gremlin gets into your head, "you could beat this before the end of the season",. And it can take over and easily become an obsession. Time to take a deep breath, take yourself off to a stretch of river that you know holds a good head of smaller fish. 'Strewth', these fish fight like hell and they are only 5-7lb., what a great days' fishing. In other words, bring your self down to earth now and again. At the end of the day it's all about catching our favourite fish and having that rod bent over.----John. |

Hi men ,
Me and sue go fishing for barbel . Given the choice , it would be to a smallish river , clear water conditions so we could watch them .Work out a plan to catch a fish . Then if swim makeing ,buzzards , hares , tree creepers , deer, barn owls , sunrise / sunsets, or even watching barbel in THEIR own elliment stopped us , we would not be to bothered Hatter |

If you do decide to use 2lb bottom as advised, then don't forget to take plenty of line with you, as you will need it. Not to mention several packets of hooks, as you will need those too.
