Posts: 1158 (03/02/06 11:50) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None The last two times i have been out Grayling fishing i have hooked Barbel the first time a small fish of 4lb z that i landed but welcomed all the same and the second a 10lb+ fish that would not fit in my Grayling landing net thus lost. Both fish were hooked on double maggot in very cold conditions.The funny thing is the last 2 times i have been out Barbel fishing i hav'nt had a sniff. Are maggots an under estimated bait this time of year? Do you think it was just luck that i hooked Barbel? Do you think it might have been a moving bait that attracted them and would you consider using maggots seriously this time of year? atb malc

Posts: 1678 (03/02/06 12:54) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Hi , Sods law indeed I am with Mike where he says that you probably wouldnt have caught that fish had it been a static bait - i reckon that those maggots just ''drifting'' through were too much for it to resist - and of course it only has a few seconds to make up it mind about taking them, unlike a static bait. Respect....

Posts: 46 (03/02/06 14:03) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I reckon if you'd have had a big enough landing net you wouldn't have caught them a friend of mine spent 3 years after a 30lb mirror and even though he fished on his own he would still never set his landing net up before hooking a fish..

Lovely morning, running a `pin and chubber through a pacey swim. A couple of grayling were caught but two barbel were hooked and lost I wouldn`t have even considered fishing for them in a shallow pacey swim at that time of year but there you go! By three methods we may learn the wisdom to catch barbel: First, by reflection, which is noblest; Second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest.-(Apologies to Confucius!)

Apologies if this takes the thread off subject a little but based on Malc's experience and Martyn's contribution too the thing I'm wondering is what are the barbel doing in "grayling swims" at this time of year? I've been on the middle severn a few times on baking hot summer days when you'd be hard pushed to get a bite in the normal pegs. During these periods plenty of fish get caught off the fast turbulent bits and I'd associated that with the fish moving to the oxygenated areas. Whilst there is some merit in that assumption, could it also be that the high atmospeheric pressure plays a part in this too? I can't seem to find the thread but didn't someone post something along these lines earlier in the week too? Strange really because most people say (I think) get on the slow deep bits in winter but maybe the place we really want to be when the pressure goes through the roof (irrespective of the time of year) is the fast shallow turbulent bits? Just a thought, anyone? All the best Mike
