Mine was quite easy. I seem to have barbel tunnel vision meaning that I fish for them no matter what the conditions when I should be after other species. Going to have to change that. Altogether not bad season though. Would you believe I rather enjoyed it Cheers Andy

When I used to go fishing for barbel it was 10lb line straight through to the hook, but after a season and a half of experimentation and listening to guys on here I'm a bit more refined in my approach now. I have learnt far too many lessons to type in one post on here (as I have to do some work today!) but the main two I will be concentrating on next year are: Learn your river. Get to know the river in the low clear times (something I didn't do enough of) so you know where things are when the river conditions get good. Learn where the fish live and more importantly feed. I spent a lot of time this year fishing almost blind once the river coloured up. Remember the basics of feeding and swim preparation. I was far to eager to arrive and cast not thinking at all about why or where I was feeding what I had fed. Perhaps old hat lessons but things I will be concentraing on next year. I intend to spend a lot less time fishing and a lot more time looking and feeding. Roll on the 16th Mark

Posts: 979 (16/03/04 12:38) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Well my first season solely in pursuit of large Barbel has come to an end. Coming from a match/pleasure background the season has been full of key learning's especially from a specialist bait and tackle perspective . Results were quite good; I targeted a difficult stretch of the Derbyshire Dove where I took my first double and also quite a few fish over 8lb's (Best 10lb 1oz and 9lb 10oz). I also had my first Dane Barbel of 7lb 9oz. Key pointers have been: - Carp baits i.e. boillies & pellets (New to me) do catch Barbel. - When things a quiet a sudden switch to a bunch of red maggots or a chunk of spam can still bring good fish . - Hemp and caster is still a great attracter for Barbel of all sizes . - Never fish less than 10lb line (12lb+ in snaggy swims). - I still like to use a quiver tip, though its not always necessary. - Back leads are a good idea. - Invest in a large spoon landing net . - Despite bad reports on here, Drennan rods and Shimano bait runners works well for me . I suppose the biggest learning which applies to both Carp and pleasure anglers alike, who are new to specialist Barbel fishing, is don't get sucked in overwhelmed by the vast array of specialist baits. Keeps things simple to start with and use a proven Barbel bait (both hook and feed). Also as stated above don't ignore Meat, Maggots and Caster - They still have there place. It doesnt matter if you catch 5 or 50 as long as you enjoy. I will not count again.

It would of been lovely to actually know about the river bed before fishing. 1st trip to my home river saw it in flood and rising - oh my god what do I do now? 2 There are some top guys on here who offer great advice. Thanks for the in the dark guided tour Jonathon - amazing help and looking forward to grabbing some Tincas with you. 3 Get a 100% waterproof poncho to chuck over when a mile from the car without an umberella. 4 Learn as much as possible during the close season re my river. 5 Dont get despondant when not catching - as a previous thread says thats one trip closer to catching. Cant weait for next season and my second Barbus.

I was out rolling meat in December on a section of the Avon that I've fished for some years. Walked to the top boundary and started fishing my way back down again.There is a good straight at the top end which produces fish regularly and then there is a shallow section that I've never seen anyone fish, ever. I was walking back past this shallow area when a small fish topped in a nice looking glide.It was probably only a dace or a grayling but it made me look at the river again, it was just about the smoothest bit of water on the whole stretch but only about two foot deep. I decided to waste (?) a half hour fishing static meat there, just left the rig exactly as it was and tossed it to the middle and let it swing round to the margins, ten minutes later I had a 13.00 on the bank. To the best of my knowledge that's the biggest fish from that section of river, only ever heard of a big 12 from there so far. Lesson learned, and two more doubles have followed from the same general area.

Get off my arse and go and find the fish. Spent most of the winter roving from peg to peg and it's revolutionised my fishing, can't wait to give it a go in the summer. 2. With apologies for twee-ness - I've learnt (or rather, had it confirmed) what a top bunch of people there are on this site. Amongst others, many thanks to the Bewdley lads (Andrew, Jim, Kris, Rich, Rob & Tom) for the invites to the pub - top nights. Also great to meet a few of the Teme lads out and about (Tatty & Webbo) and the Avon boys (Pons & Big Steve). Look forward to meeting a few more on the fish-ins next year. Cheers Scott

And joining the Barbel Society...best few quid l have spent.. And helping the revenue in boths camps..buying their merchandise.. And catching a new River Tees PB...theres a double out there with my name on it.. Special thanks and love go to my late father who passed away last May...who left me and my family a nice inheritance so l could upgrade my barbel gear...and help to move house...MANY THANKS DAD LOVE AND MISS YOU LOTS.. I learned the way barbel act and feed and how bloody hard they fight.

(c)...My favourite swim's will seem a much longer walk . (d)...My fishing partner Rich:, will have to listen to repeat's of thing's I've said a few minutes before, a lot more often .. (e)...The plus side will be---God willing, that I shall still be fit enough to enjoy my fishing, and the company (old and new), that following this wonderful pastime has brought me .
