Hi Andy, I just wondered if you might be able to put something on the Barbel Fishing World site about the new website I've created for Doncaster & District AA. The address is www.doncaster-and-district-angling-association.co.uk Most of the waters won't be of interest, but the Rivers Don & Idle are Doncaster & DAA Water and hold Barbel. I've only caught them to 6lb 2oz in the Don, but there are plenty of rumours of 8lb fish. Also 20,000 Barbel were stocked back in February so prospects for the future are looking good. I don't know enough abouth the Idle to comment. The reason I thought this might be of interest to BFW readers is that the club book is only £16.00 a year. Thanks for your time, Matt Cheers Andy

Posts: 97 (03/06/03 13:06) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Nice site, although I understood the club had lost the Bailey Bridge stretches on the Idle. Regardless, this area is not worth pursuing if your target is barbel. There may be odd fish around but the main barbel reaches are upstream of Bawtry, through Retford. Is the figure of 20,000 barbel accurate or a slip of the digit? That's a massive number of fish to stock in the Doncaster AA stretch which is only 3 miles long. Would I be right in assuming that the fish have been spread throughout the river from the tidal reaches around St Mary's Bridge up to Sheffield? The long term prospects are quite fascinating if the species manages to colonise and grow. Personally I'm not sure the Doncaster to Sprotborough reaches are suited to barbel. Fifteen feet deep and sluggish lends itself better to bream but who knows, we may see a new chapter written on tracking down and tactics for barbel in these waters.

Think the figure should be 2000 though. Tony.

I have noticed this on the Bristol Avon and on the Ouse recently and the Thames guys often get bream and barbel together. 15 feet deep probably sounds a lot like the lower seven to me, I guess survival shall depend upon how close potential spawning areas are? Posts: 1420 (03/06/03 19:47) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Hi Bob, Donny AA have very probably lost the rights to Bailey Bridge on the Idle, but it wasn't 100% at the last meeting. I will probably find out on the 9th at the AGM. I'm not too up on the Idle, but quite a few people have told me that Barbel to around 5lbs been showing. I've no idea how many there are by looking at what's happened on the Don and Dearne I imagine the Idle will become a better prospect in the not too distant future. I agree that the Donny AA stretch of the Don isn't as typical a Barbel water as below Crimsall Sluice or around the Mexborough area, but there are plenty in there and there are strong rumours of the bigger ones showing here. Also Sprotborough Weir is included in Donny AA Water. The 20,000 Barbel were reported in the Doncaster Free Press back in February. The paper said there were 3 sites - Sprotborough Weir, Newton Farm and Crimpsall Sluice. I've been unable to find out if they put them both below and above teh Salmon Run. The EA magazine (Catch or whatever it's called) did a report on the Don at 3 sites. They implies that all 3 sites were thriving, but the figures showed a good increase in fish population at Mexborough and 'above' Doncaster but there was about a 20% fall below Crimpsall Sluice. I have to agree that Crimsall Sluice is getter harder and harder, especially for silver fish.

There are a few fish in the stretch below Harlington weir - up to perhaps 6lbs if we ignore the wild exagerations of those who don't carry scales - but can anyone tell me whether Darfield is producing any fish? I can recall a mate of mine catching one weighing perhaps 3lb some 10 or 15 years ago. That was in the stretch about half a mile above the road bridge. Those fish could be huge....

Posts: 1420 (04/06/03 18:20) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I've not fished the Dearne myself, but I did fish the nearby Bolton Brick Ponds and two separate anglers were telling me that fish to 6lb were common and that I ought to get myself down there! There was no mention of bigger fish. Does anybody know who controls which parts of the Dearne?

The Darfield stretch used to be day ticket, run by by the local Miners Welfare. The Tidal Don is Free. Most of the river from Doncaster to Sprotborough is Donc & Dist AA. Above Sprot. Weir through to Mexboro and beyond is Rotherham & Dist UAF. Above there yo need to get Ron Clay involved. Info is patchy - several free stretches, espcially around Rotherham and up on through Sheffield. Had a report last winter of a 6-8 chub from behind the Sheffield Wednesday 'football' ground (if that isn't a contradition in terms!)

There is a report of an authenticated 11lb.2oz. barbel caught last february at Retford on the Derbyshire county angling club water. Posts: 1420 (11/07/03 18:11) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Spoke to Chris Firth, EA's Fisheries officer for the East Riding Area and apparently he can certify that a 10lb 2oz Barbel was caught from Sprotborough Weir at the back end of last season. Fish to 8lb have come out this season (at Sprotborough Weir), plus fish of up to 7.5lb from below Crimpsall Sluice. I also spoke to a chap who had been fishing near the sill of the Weir and he had seen Salmon up to about 4lb trying to get up the weir! Any one who knows the river knows what a miracle this is! Bob, you were right - it was only 2,000 Barbel stocked into the river in Feb (not 20,000) and the rights to the Idle using access along the lane to Bailey Bridge has been lost by Donny AA. I have still to find out if access is still availble by walking downstream from Misson.
